Motorola has already updated its Moto X 2nd Gen (2014) with the latest Android Lollipop build and we’ve decided to run our battery life tests again. Lollipop brings a number of improvements including a number of battery optimizations combined under what’s known as Project Volta.
We’ve already detailed Volta’s features and you can read more about them right here.
In our previous tests with phones that recently got updated to Lollipop we weren’t able to determine a specific pattern in the change in battery life – some of the phones did better in talk time or web browsing, some did worse. It seems every device behaves differently under Lollipop OS, so we really had no clue what to expect from the updated Moto X 2nd Gen. Read more »

On Android, Google Now serves as the virtual assistant Siri is on iOS and Cortana is on Windows Phone. Thus, Google Now can take voice commands and act on them. But up until recently that did not include toggling certain system settings – not directly, at least.
The good news is that as of this moment Google Now is in fact able to toggle your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections on or off, as well as the flashlight functionality enabled by your phone’s LED flash. The one caveat is that you need to be running Android 5.0 Lollipop. Read more »
JDI is one of the big players in the mobile display space, and the Japanese company has now announced a new smartwatch screen. It’s of the round variety, as you can see, and it’s the reflective type. According to its maker, this means it will enable some significant advancements in smartwatch battery life.
That’s because its power consumption can be as low as 0.5% or less when compared to a traditional LCD module. JDI says that its reflective design can achieve this because it’s different than a normal LCD panel, where 80% of the power requirements go to the backlight. Read more »
Samsung’s latest PR stunt / ad / promotional material for the Gear VR headset comes from Australia. Through a media agency over there, the Korean company set up a diving gear shop in the Australian outback, 1,200 km from the nearest ocean.
Naturally curious people enter and wonder where the water is. The key to everything is obviously the Gear VR, used in conjunction with the Galaxy Note 4 to give people in the middle of the desert the feeling that they’re in the ocean at that very moment, more than a thousand kilometers away, surrounded by sharks no less. Nearly a week after there were reports that Apple is secretly working on an electric vehicle, Bloomberg is reporting that the Cupertino-based company is planning to begin production of the vehicle by the year 2020. That’s an aggressive timeframe given that experienced automobile companies typically spend 5-7 years developing a car.
As per the report, Apple’s car team consists of 200+ people, which is inline with an earlier report that said hundreds of employees are working on the project. In the past couple of months, the iPhone maker has been hiring experts in technologies for batteries and robotics – recently, electric-car battery maker A123 Systems sued Apple for poaching its top engineers. For years, people have been doing sponsored videos on YouTube on top of having YouTube ads enabled for their account. This allowed them to earn money from their sponsors that they endorse during the video, along with the earnings from the ads that play before and during the video.
Unfortunately, Google is not quite happy with that. You see, when people have sponsors for their videos, it leaves Google out of the loop, unable to earn anything from the revenue that people are generating on YouTube. So Google has now decided to stop people from having sponsored content on YouTube with its new policy change. Read more »
Samsung held a grand press conference at this year’s CES, but most of you surely remember the rather disappointing void of smartphones at the venue. Amidst the sea of home appliances and multimedia service announcements there was still something that captured our interest. The Korean giant unveiled a brand new TV technology, called SUHD and promised it will be available in upcoming models.
There has been little information about these TV sets, except for various size and price speculations and what Samsung already made clear about the technology. Today, however a new leak claims to disclose information about the full SUHD lineup with model numbers and prices. It is reported that the TVs will range from about $2500 all the way to $23,000 which is in no way budget friendly even in the premium segment. They will also be powered by the company’s own OS – Tizen, which is also exciting as the platform is growing at a phenomenal rate. Read more »
