YouTube has enabled playback of 4K videos at 60 frames per second. For the time being, the feature is available on just six videos, which are hand picked by YouTube staff.

Google revealed on its developer forum that the company intends to switch to Pointer Events API from the current Touch Events across the board on all versions of Chrome. This has the benefit of increasing compatibility with multiple input devices and reduce the scrolling lag on Android.

The Pointer Events specification was first introduced by Microsoft back in 2012 for Internet Explorer and was quickly adopted by W3C as a web standard due to its superiority over the Touch Events specification. Pointer Events allows the use of multiple input tools other than a mouse, such as a stylus or a finger, common on modern devices. Read more »

Less than a couple of weeks after there were reports of the voice calling feature being tested on WhatsApp for iPhone, co-founder Brian Acton has revealed that the feature will be made available to iOS users soon.

Although Acton, who made the revelation at Facebook’s F8 developer conference yesterday, first said that the feature would roll out in a couple of weeks, he later backtracked from the statement, saying that it will take “several weeks”. Read more »

The Jide Remix tablet, which was announced back in January this year and is already available in China, is set to be available globally in the coming months. The company has launched a Kickstarter campaign that allows people in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most European countries to order the tablet, which is priced at $349 and begins shipping in May.

Specs-wise, the Remix ultra-tablet features an 11.6-inch, 1920×1080 screen, a 1.8 GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, 2 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of expandable storage space. The device sports 5MP front and rear-facing cameras, packs in a 8100 mAh battery, and runs a modified version of Android 4.4.2 called Remix OS. Today Twitter has officially outed its competitor for media darling Meerkat, a live video streaming app that’s gotten a lot of coverage recently. Twitter’s version of this is called Periscope, and is now available for iOS. An Android app is reportedly in the works, but no launch timeline has been given.

Like Meerkat, Periscope is a live video streaming app that’s easy to use. When you start broadcasting, your followers will immediately be notified, and they can comment and send you ‘hearts’ in real-time (these seem to be Periscope’s version of Facebook’s Likes). Read more »

Amazon just became the first big cloud storage provider to offer an unlimited plan. It will cost you $59.99 per year, which is basically $5 per month, and it lets you “store an infinite number of new and existing photos, videos, files, documents, movies, and music”, according to Amazon’s press release.

There’s another option too, which can come in handy if all you need is some space to store photos. The aptly named Unlimited Photos plan gives you the ability to “store an infinite number of photos”, along with 5GB of other files, all for just $11.99 per year. That can be translated into $1 per month. Something like this was already available for subscribers to Amazon Prime and Fire device owners, but now it’s open for all. Read more »

Microsoft did surprise many by announcing the free upgrade of the Windows 10 for everyone in China. Even those who’re on a pirated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8. Now the company plans to take over the mobile space by making the Office suite free for the devices with screens smaller than 10-inches.

Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president for Office 365 Client Apps and Services, noted in a blog post that Office suite will be offered for mobile platforms with a freemium model. That means, the Windows, Android and iOS device owners will get the productivity apps of Office suite. Read more »

While many await the voice calling to be enabled through WhatsApp, the instant messenger developers are addressing another problem. Whenever one uninstalls WhatsApp, changes devices or performs factory reset, all previous conversations as well as media gets wiped out.

AMD has definitely lost a lot of its former glory. Once on top of the food chain, the company is now struggling to make ends meet with shrinking CPU and GPU sales. This decline has naturally been felt on the stock market as well, where AMD is now priced at around $2.64 a piece – a number which was as high as $40 in 2006.

This has put the company in a tough spot, but its extensive R&D capacity really makes it a desired target for acquisition. Over the past few years, there has been a lot of talk about such buy-outs, most recently Mediatek was cited as a prospective buyer, but none of the plans has actually stuck. A new rumor now hints that Samsung might have its sight set on the struggling semiconductor company. Read more »
