Facebook has announced two new ways of logging into apps using your Facebook account. The ability to log into other services using your Facebook account has always been a convenient option but the cost of that convenience was giving away your personal information to an app that you may not fully trust.

With the new Anonymous Login feature, you can now log into services without giving away any personal information. You will see the option to login anonymously on apps that support this feature along with the standard Facebook Login. Read more »

Facebook released its financial results for the first quarter of 2014 on Wednesday. The company reported revenue of $2.5 billion, up by 72% over the same period last year.

The report also revealed that the average revenue per user (ARPU) has been increased across globe as compared to the previous years. Read more »

The company behind the popular fitness tracking app Moves announced that it got officially acquired by Facebook. Financial details of the transaction have not been revealed.

Facebook has announced a new feature for users of their mobile apps. Called Nearby Friends, the feature is designed to let you catch up with your friends on Facebook if they are close to your location.

Nearby Friends obviously requires you to share your location with your friends for it to work but you can choose whom to share it with. Your friends also need to enable sharing with you for you to see them. Once enabled, you will get notifications when your friends are nearby. You can also share a precise location so that people can see where exactly you are on a map. Read more »

Flickr has released version 3.0 of the iOS and Android app that is a complete overhaul over the previous versions. To put it simply, it now looks like Instagram.

The update is available on both iOS and Android and for once we see no preference given to either platform, with both getting the latest update with a UI optimized for that particular platform (unlike Instagram). Read more »

Twitter has implemented a new notification system for the web, wherein you will receive pop up notifications within the browser page. Now, every time someone retweets your tweets, marks them as favorite, replies to them, sends you a direct message or follows you, you will get a notification on the web page. This feature is similar to the notifications that Facebook has had for a long time now.

Along with showing information, you can also interact with these notifications, so if someone sends you a reply, you can reply to them from within the popup notification. Read more »

Twitter has a new look! The popular social networking website has introduced web profiles and in more than one way the new feature looks quite similar to what the other social networking competitors have on offer.

Over the years, emoji has managed to occupy a considerable portion of our text based communication. Those with devices capable of entering and viewing emoji often use them on social networking sites such as Twitter. However, even today, several major platforms and browsers don’t natively support emoji, which leads to their users not seeing the text the way they should be.

To solve this problem to quite an extent, Twitter has now started identifying emoji in tweets and replacing them with their own custom emoji on the web that can be viewed regardless of the platform or the browser. Read more »

Google has added an option to check your profile and content views on its Google+ social network. The counter sits just under your profile picture, next to the follower count and accumulates the hits to your profile, pictures, posts, etc.

The feature has automatically rolled out to users and is on by default but can be turned off by unckecking the “show how many times your profile and content have been viewed.” field if you’re not completely sure about sharing the information. Read more »

Taking a page from Facebook (pun definitely intended), Twitter has added two new features to its service regarding the way you upload and share features. Now you can tag people in photos and also upload up to four at once.

Before, you had to manually add usernames in a tweet to tag people, which took up precious characters (some of which were already taken by the photo). Now, you can tag up to 10 people in a photo without using any additional characters for the usernames, leaving more room for your tweet. Read more »

Those of you using the Facebook Messenger on Windows probably got the same message as myself this morning. According to the notification, the Messenger will stop working on Monday, March 3.

So long @facebook.com – with its latest update Facebook is shutting down its email service after more than three years.

The service never truly took off the ground and Facebook didn’t update it that much, seemingly favoring its Messenger service. Now Facebook Mail users are getting a notification letting them know that the service is shutting down and will be forwarding their emails to the primary provided email address on their accounts. Facebook has agreed to purchase WhatsApp. The social networking giant will pay the staggering $19 billion for the massively popular cross-platform messaging client in cash and stock ($4 billion in cash, $12 billion in stock, and additional $3 billion in restricted stock which will vest over the four years after the deal’s closing).

As part of the agreement, WhatsApp will continue to operate independently. Read more »

2013 saw Twitter’s IPO but it has not been a good year for the concise social network. The company filed its 2013 financial report with the SEC and posted a whopping $511 million net loss in Q4.

Revenue for the year doubled compared to 2012, however the first three quarters weren’t too kind to Twitter either and the net loss for the full year is $645 million. Read more »
