MWC 2010 overview: what happened and what should have happened

by 506 comments

This year’s Mobile World Congress was a let down for me both as a journalist and as a user. We saw only a handful of newsworthy handsets and almost none of those was a trend-setter. If that’s all planned for the first half of 2010, well then, I would be more than sad for the direction this all is going. Sorry, guys, but someone has to say it. This MWC sucked!

Sony Ericsson Vivaz waltzing in our office, here’s an HD video

by 723 comments

We just got our hands on the HD-totting Sony Ericsson Vivaz and you can bet you’ll be getting a review. But before then, we’ve got a quick video demonstrating the cameraphone in action plus an HD camera sample.

It’s sleek and thinner than what the photos so far suggested. The Vivaz is actually quite quick to snap them 8 megapixel photos, but its key selling point will definitely be the 720p HD video recording. The Vivaz is the second HD-recording cameraphone and all hopes are that it will do better than the pioneering Omnia HD. From what we’ve seen so far, the prospects are quite good. At least it doesn’t duplicate any frames and delivers all 24 frames worth of HD footage.

So you think your iPhone has a killer screen? Check THIS out!

by 593 comments

We have a little something that we’re working on right now and we just couldn’t keep it all to ourselves. It’s a phone with a screen so gorgeous that it easily puts to shame the current best. Blacks are immensely deep, the colors are vivid and the viewing angles are mind-boggling. Here’s it compared to the iPhone 3G (both screens set at maximum brightness):

We can’t tell you what phone it is just yet but it surely has one hell of a display. We haven’t seen anything like that.

Update: that’s actually the Samsung Wave display up there. You can check our full preview of the thing here here. Read more »

Apple iPad overview: The good, the bad and the ugly

by 1,226 comments

You might be aware that Apple just announced a certain little (or not so little depending how you look at it) gadget called the Apple iPad. One only needs a quick glance to realize that it looks like a vastly oversized iPod Touch but what are its main strengths and its greatest disadvantages? Here is the way I see it:

Nokia X6 enters the review queue in all its capacitive goodness

by 853 comments

I do admit that GSMArena.com is running a bit late on X6 review. Unfortunately sometimes getting the phones is not as easy as some of you might think. Especially when we are talking a handset of such high public interest as the Nokia X6, on which everyone wants to get their hands.

But now that we have it in, we can guarantee you that we will do our best to come up with a detailed review as soon as possible. But for now we have prepared a short unboxing video as a brief warm-up. This will also give you a chance to ask some questions that you want answered in the review.

10 good reasons to jailbreak your iPhone, no matter what generation

by 69 comments

I guess there’s a large number of iPhone owners that are still hesitant to jailbreak their iPhones. They consider jailbreaking a dangerous and daunting task that may eventually void their warranty. Since I’m on the other side of that barricade, I’ve put down a nice list of the 10 new features you will get if you go for jailbreaking. The benefits are more than ten, but I’ve compiled the most major ones.

Jailbreaking is a software process that unlocks the access to the iPhone original system files so that you can modify some of them for the better. You shouldn’t confuse it with a carrier unlock. Jailbreaking allows us to unleash the true power of the Apple’s iPhone.

iPhone jailbreak

Getting your iPhone jailbroken is like getting a totally different device – at least software-wise. And while I find it next to impossible to resist the tempting new features, I can totally understand you may have perfectly good reasons to keep your iPhone untouched. But hopefully, this list will help you convert.

And a word of warning! This post is not a tutorial in jailbreaking your iPhone. If you need one, a nice place to start is iClarified iPhone section. Installing unofficial third-party apps may cause unwanted side effects so always rely on your good judgment when dealing with those. I am not to be held responsible for any damage you may inflict to your iPhone.

Now that I’ve taken that off my chest, please, say hello to freedom.

Viewsonic VNB102 Viewbook or how I broke two of my top buying rules

by 15 comments

I broke two of my own rules today when I got myself a new ultra cheap netbook. It’s a viewbook actually or at least that’s what Viewsonic is calling their VNB102. But whatever Marketing is naming it, it’s a plain netbook that’s hardly exciting enough to write home about. Yet I’m writing about it here as it made me break my two top buying rules.

In terms of feature set and technology innovation, the Canon EOS 7D is definitely a ground breaking prosumer camera in the Canon DSLR portfolio. And it’s got a new portfolio segment all to itself.

I was anxious to get it as soon as it became available and for the past couple of months I’ve been using it extensively for various photography tasks. And here’s a spoiler for you – I’m really pleased with it. To learn more, check out the full preview.

Next up for review: It’s BlackBerry Bold 9700 time and we have an unboxing vid for you

by 15 comments

We have to admit that all this interest for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 puzzles us a bit. No, it’s not a bad handset or anything but the BlackBerry devices are anything but mass market and feature-stuffed. But then again, that only makes the BlackBerry Bold 9700 achievement all the more prestigious.

And now that we have one of those babies in our office we can finally check out what all this fuss is about ourselves. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is certainly much more compact and easily fitting in the hand than its predecessor. Oh and that trackpad certainly works great too outdoing the E72 optical trackpad by several laps.

As a special treat for you guys, we’ve prepared a short unboxing video for you. Check it out after the break.

HTC HD2 battery life test ready, not bad at all

by 78 comments

Let’s face it, battery tests are long and tedious. They’re also quite hard to time correctly as mobile phone usage varies quite a lot. But that’s not the reason why over at GSMArena we rarely have something specific to say about battery life in our otherwise detailed reviews.

Enter time constraints. The thing is, we rarely have the test units at our disposal long enough to properly test the battery life without interfering with our reviewing routine. In those cases the reviewers try to evaluate the battery performance based on their subjective feeling and experience rather than anything else. Not that can’t be correct. And we don’t pretend it is.

With the HTC HD2 we are using a retail version (unlike all the many pre-production units that come our way) and we had the opportunity to take our time and test the battery life properly.
