Nexus 10 goes on pre-order at Staples, taken apart elsewhere

by 83 comments

The Nexus 10 stock at the Play Store was depleted pretty quickly when it launched, so it’s good to see the 10-inch Google tablet moving to other stores. Staples have it on pre-order right now, but unfortunately won’t start deliveries until two-to-three weeks.

Meanwhile, the tablet has been torn down, revealing what makes it tick (spoiler: plenty of Samsung-made parts). Read more »

Nokia Lumia 820 drops by the office, shoots a Cinemagraph

by 61 comments

The Nokia Lumia 820 stopped by for a quick visit and the first thing we did was put it in front of our camera. The phone is the second Windows Phone 8 handset from Nokia and it differs from the 920 flagship in several areas.

While it misses out on the PureView and PureMotion action, the Lumia 820 actually has several advantages over the Lumia 920. Read more »

Samsung has started production of smaller, faster 64GB embedded memory chips

by 58 comments

There’s been a worrying trend of smartphones and tablets having very little on-board storage and no memory card slots, so this comes as a bit of good news – Samsung has already started production of new embedded memory chips for mobile devices with 64GB capacity.

The chips are built on a 10nm process and are 20% smaller than current chips, while offering 30% better performance compared to Samsung’s older models (“older” here means from five months ago). Read more »

Sony Xperia go goes up a snowy mountain, suffers various accidents, lives to tell the tale

by 39 comments

The Sony Xperia go just can’t catch a break – the durable Android handset was tortured in the summer and now the same guys are back to torment it in winter conditions. The poor guy was thrown around, ran over, jumped on, bashed, dunked and put through other trials.

The Xperia go sports an IP67 certification, giving it dust and water resistance, but it also seems to handle subzero temperatures quite well. Read more »

HTC DROID DNA takes on the quad-core Android competition

by 48 comments

HTC just announced their DROID DNA monster smartphone, but does it have what it takes to challenge the current flagships? The 5″ 1080p is one-of-a-kind at the moment, offering unmatched sharpness. And the Snapdragon S4 Pro is the most powerful chipset in an Android phone right now, though it’s not the only phone to use it. But there are plenty of other variables to consider.

To make the comparison easier, we’ve made a head-to-head table, pitting the HTC DROID DNA against the LG Optimus G and the Samsung Galaxy S III. Check it out! Read more »

Battery tests of HTC One X+ are complete, here are the results

by 61 comments

The HTC One X+ is a quick update to the company’s flagship – they pumped up the Tegra 3 chipset to higher clock speeds, fitted a bigger battery to compensate and threw in some extra storage to sweeten the pot.

Now the question is whether the bigger batter and Jelly Bean are enough to offset the extra power usage from the overclocked chipset. Read more »

NenaMark 2 scores for Sony Xperia C360X appear, promise Xperia T-level specs

by 36 comments

We’ve been seeing a steady stream of leaks about the next crop of Sony Xperia Androids but this one is about a new model – the C3602 (since the last digit indicates the region, let’s just call it the C360X).

We’ve already seen the low-end C1 series (Xperia E and E Dual) and the high-end C6 series (Odin and Yuga with their 5″ 1080p screens), so this C360X should be our first look at the mid-range offerings. Read more »

by 79 comments

Microsoft’s latest mobile OS is getting ready for prime time and the ailing HTC is marketing its Windows Phone 8X as the “signature” Windows Phone 8 handset. We already reviewed the 8X, now it’s time to see how long it lasts in our battery test.

iOS apps still make more money, but Android apps are closing in

by 48 comments

Android’s app store has a reputation of having more free apps and games than the iOS store, which is good for consumers, but the iOS store is better known for bringing in more revenue, which is good for developers. According to App Annie that is still true, but the gap is closing.

The analysts at App Annie have taken the two types of paid apps into account – premium apps (you pay for the app) and freemium apps (the app is free, but you can pay for in-game purchases). Freemium apps are the primary revenue generators on both platforms, showing incredible growth. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy S Duos battery tests are complete, results are inside

by 15 comments

Dual-SIM phones are still relatively rare and usually limited to the low-end, but the Samsung Galaxy S Duos takes after the Galaxy S III mini in terms of looks (though not in terms of specs, unfortunately).

Dual-SIM phones are usually bought when there are no good plans available – ones that offer enough talk time, texts and data. So, how long can the S Duos last if you need the second SIM for even more talking? Read more »

The Lumia 820 is Nokia’s greatest tree-hugger to date, and the Finns are very proud of it

by 23 comments

Nokia is very proud of its environmentally friendly approach to phone making and the new Nokia Lumia 820 is among its best efforts in this regard. The phone is made from recycled materials and bio-plastics (made from inedible plants) and doesn’t use a number of materials that cause environmental issues.

The phone itself can be fully recycled, just like its packaging, which is made from 60% recycled materials to begin with. Check out a video that explains Nokia’s recycling efforts after the break. Read more »
