Nvidia announces GeForce GTX 580M and 570M GPU, claims it to be the fastest notebook GPU ever

by 14 comments

Nvidia has just updated their range of high-end notebook GPUs with the launch of the new GTX 580M and 570M, which are claimed to be the fastest notebook GPU ever. The 580M is said to offer six times the tessellation performance of any other notebook GPU (read Radeon HD 6970M) and 20% better performance than the previous generation GPUs. It will be available soon on the Alienware M18x and M17x gaming notebooks.

The M18x will give you the option of configuring it with two GTX 580M so you can burn through you battery faster than you can spell “Alienware”. Meanwhile, the M17x will offer the GTX 580M with Nvidia’s Optimus technology, that lets you switch between discrete and onboard graphics automatically depending upon your usage. Read more »

Android crosses 500,000 daily activations, poised to reach 1 million by October

by 27 comments

You may remember back in December Andy Rubin, Senior VP of Mobile at Google, tweeted that over 300,000 Android phones are getting activated everyday. That was over six months ago and over two years from the launch of Android. But in those six months, the figures have almost doubled and according to his latest tweet, over 500,000 Android phones are getting activated everyday.

That’s not all. The activations are growing at a rate of 4.4% per week, which means by the end of October Read more »

Apple to look elsewhere for ARM SoC production in 2012, much to Samsung’s dismay

by 25 comments

It seems that rivalry in a key market with Apple may have cost Samsung a valuable customer. Thus far Apple has been sourcing their A4 and A5 chips that they use in their products from Samsung but it seems due to increasing tension between the two companies Apple may be moving to someone else to make their next generation ARM SoC.

The company that is said to be most likely to take over from Samsung is Taiwan Semiconductor Marketing Company. Apple’s next generation processor, dubbed the A6, will most likely use the foundry’s 28nm process Read more »

Sony VAIO Z series puts Core i7 in feather-weight 1.2kg package, has fancy Power Media Dock

by 9 comments

Sony announced a new 13″ VAIO Z laptop, which makes even the S Series model look chubby. Long story short, the new Z Series puts an Intel Core i7 processor in a body that weighs less than 1.2kg and is thinner than 17mm.

There’s also a clever dock that houses a discreet video card and a Blu-ray drive (which is great as neither of those two have a place on a portable device if you ask me). And typically for the Z Series, the laptop weighs less than its price in gold. Read more »

Here’s the winner of the Nokia Shorts 2011 video contest, it’s so cool

by 12 comments

You may have never heard of Nokia Shorts, and no it’s not some dirty euphemism for underwear. It’s actually a creative contest for film-making for artists, armed with the world’s current camera-phone top dog the Nokia N8.

The winner is a chap, named James W Griffiths, who made a split-screen video showing us two different points of view of two people, living in different cities. He’s called it “Splitscreen: A love story”. The video is brilliantly thought out and you can tell the creator spent many hours, if not days waiting for the right shot Read more »

Nokia talks about the N9 browser, shares some scores too

by 671 comments

The N9 continues to top the worldwide charts for most interesting handset of the month and that’s the way Nokia made it. We waited for the first MeeGo device for nearly two years and now that it’s finally official we can’t keep off it. It’s made to blend in top notch design and innovative build quality with a “fresh out the oven” OS with Nokia’s knowhow of craftsmanship and technology all into one device. A powerful combo indeed.

Now the official Nokia blog – Conversations, is dedicating an article to the new browser of the N9, detailing how it works, how it feels, how it scores and what were the ideas behind it. Nokia-appointed “browser guru” Christian Sejersen shares that the N9′s Meego browser was designed with the idea not to annoy its users and keep out of the way while they are browsing. So the UI is quite minimalistic – much like on an Android powered smartphone. Read more »

Ericsson demos LTE Advanced, jaw-dropping reaches 950+ Mbps on the go

by 21 comments

While carriers are still pushing all sorts of technologies as “4G”, Ericsson did a quick demo run of actual 4G – LTE Advanced – using a test network. They achieved mind-boggling speeds of around 950Mbps – in other words, much, much faster than current “4G” offerings (including LTE) and faster than even Wi-Fi 802.11n.

Ericsson expects the first commercial LTE Advanced network to be up and running by 2013, though considering most networks haven’t even begun rolling out LTE, I doubt Advanced will reach many people soon. Still, here’s what you can expect from LTE Advanced. Read more »

A few quick impressions on the Samsung Exhibit 4G

by 1,595 comments

With all the buzz around the Galaxy line of handsets, many people forget that it was cool mid-range handsets with good bang-for-the buck that took Samsung to the top. We managed to spend a bit of quality time with the just released Samsung Exhibit 4G for T-Mobile in the United States, and here come some fresh impressions for you.

The Exhibit 4G is by no means a flagship device, but it was never meant to be one. Its $79.99 price tag puts it in the middle of the T-Mobile Android range and it got most of the hardware of the last year’s Galaxy S. Read more »

Apple iOS 5 beta 2 is out, Wi-Fi sync, OTA updates, bug fixes and improvements inside

by 542 comments

Apple released the iOS 5 beta 2 for developers a few days ago without any official announcements or whatsoever. Not that we expected something like that, it’s just another iOS beta version after all.

Still many users have already upgraded with the first beta (one way or another) and are surely eager to get the new one. I’ve already installed and explored it and here is a quick summary of the changes I found so far. Read more »

Acer Iconia Tab A500 gets Android 3.1 update ahead of schedule

by 292 comments

The start of the week brought some great news to the Acer Iconia Tab A500 users around the globe. The Honeycomb 3.1 update has just surfaced and those brave enough to try a manual flash might get it right away.

The update is the real deal, meaning an official Acer update, which just burst out ahead of its time. It could all be on purpose to test if there are any problems with it but as usual with such updates – those willing to risk it and try it sooner rather than later are in no short supply. Read more »

A load of Nokia N9 camera and video samples surface, show potential

by 53 comments

Camera and video samples taken with the Nokia N9 MeeGo smartphone are still scarce so understandably we got pretty excited when we stumbled upon a whole bunch of them today.

The first product of the N9 camera surfaced last week, a pretty nice-looking 720p video so we are getting optimistic that Nokia can produce another great cameraphone in the N9. Read more »

Seagull flies off with a GoPro camera, apparently [VIDEO]

by 316 comments

You may have heard or seen the GoPro range of wearable cameras. According to the manufacturer they are the world’s most popular wearable HD camera for sports. They are pretty interesting. But it seems humans are not the only ones who find them interesting. According to this video below, a seagull flew away with one while it was on and recording, enabling it to capture its flight.

To anyone who has spent a considerable amount of time on the Internet, only one word comes to mind after watching the video: fake. First of all, why was the guy carrying the camera almost close to the ground? Why did he drop it when it saw the seagull approaching? What was he doing while the seagull flew with it? And most importantly, how on earth did he manage to find that camera? Read more »

Nokia will not return to MeeGo even if N9 turns out to be a hit, says Stephen Elop

by 182 comments

Nokia announced the MeeGo-based N9 smartphone last week and so far it has received nothing but praise from everyone who used the phone. Even in our short stint with the phone, we were blown away by the design, build, display and the interface of the phone and are aching to spend more time with it.

You’d think after receiving such positive response Nokia would give more attention to MeeGo, which is partly the reason why the N9 got such a fantastic response in the first place. But it seems Nokia doesn’t want anything to do with MeeGo anymore. Read more »

Skype for iPad demo video leaked, shows off all the features silently [VIDEO]

by 9 comments

Skype had apparently put up a demo video of their upcoming app for the iPad 2 on YouTube but later on decided to pull it down but not before someone managed to download it, albeit without sound.

The demo video shows off the redesigned interface, new full screen view, integrated messaging function and ability to switch between the front and rear cameras. A disclaimer in the video tells you that audio quality will depend on your Wi-Fi or 3G connection, which means the iPad version will also have 3G video calling support like the iPhone version.
