GSMArena labs: Check out our eyesight test to find out your screen pixel density limits

by 155 comments

Android phone manufacturers have been accused of pushing for higher resolution displays purely for marketing purposes. We have to admit, we were pretty skeptical ourselves whether a small, pocketable phone needs a 1080p screen, let alone more. Having seen the first wave of QHD devices, we’ve come around – the extra resolution does make a difference, especially with the ever increasing screen sizes.

But where’s the cutoff limit at which you stop seeing any further benefit from adding extra pixels per inch? We’ve devised a test to help you find out. Read more »

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime hands-on

by 61 comments

Having a global best-seller is nice, but for a company that makes as many devices as Samsung, targeting different regions with different phones makes a lot of sense. The Samsung Galaxy Prime has modest display specs, while keeping the rest on proper mid-range levels. There’s a dual-SIM option in certain regions.

by 71 comments

The LG G Watch R review is now up and it’s time to put it through the gauntlet of our community’s opinion about it. Watches are quite personal items and are seen as a reflection of your personality, so we think this week’s poll is going to be something interesting to check out.

Especially in this day and age when almost every major tech company offers a smartwatch. There are plastic and metal ones, square and round, well almost round. We’re looking at you Moto 360. Read more »

Lenovo Vibe X2 hands-on

by 14 comments

Making a dent in the mid-range smartphone market is a tough job for anyone to pull off, but Lenovo might be just on to something with the Vibe X2. The multi-layered smartphones, as the company touts it, boasts a very cool and colorful design without coming off as tacky.

Of course, there will be people that don’t like the design, but trust me, it’s looking even cooler in person. Now that the company officially owns Motorola, it is competing outside China as well and has the ambitions to conquer the likes of Apple, Samsung and LG. And what better way to grab consumer’s attention than a flashy look? Read more »

by 31 comments

One of the thinnest smartphones around, the Gionee Elife S5.1, has just made it through our review routine and you can find out what happened in our in-depth article.

The Gionee Elife S5.1 uses a 4.8″ Super AMOLED screen and runs on the MT6592 chip with an octa-core Cortex-A7 processor. We’ve seen this platform perform rather poorly, when it comes to battery endurance, so we didn’t expect anything impressive from the Elife S5.1 but we surely had our eyes open for potential surprises. This year we’ve seen mobile device makers launching smartwatches left and right. One of these will be made by TAG Heuer, one of Switzerland’s best known watch brands.

Back in September, that company has already admitted that it’s developing a smartwatch of its own. And now a rumor claims to know when the wearable will be unveiled. Read more »

Sony’s Xperia Aquatech store – a unique marketing promotion and amazing underwater experience

by 21 comments

Earlier today Sony opened its first of a kind underwater store. But before you put on your bathing suits, there is a slight catch. The Xperia Aquatech store is a promotional activity, carried by the Japanese company in Dubai, or rather 4 meter under sea level near the city.

The three daylong event aims to demo the marine capabilities of some of Sony’s water-proof devices and most of all build publicity. The guest list is very short, with only competition winners, media and VIPs attending and from the looks of it was nothing short of a spectacular experience.

Attendees are required to participate in some mandatory scuba diving training and are put under the constant supervision of a diving instructor. Read more »

Motorola releases an amusing series of ads for the Moto 360

by 37 comments

Motorola has released four new ads for the Moto 360 smartwatch. The ads focus on the design and craftsmanship of the device while stressing that despite its classic design it’s a device made for modern times.

The ads are pretty awesome and genuinely amusing. They also perfectly encapsulate the experience of using the device, that despite its sophisticated appearance you are still going to occasionally get a silly notification on it that’s just at complete odds with design. Not something that would happen with an actual premium watch. Read more »
