Jolla Tablet hands-on

Founded by former Nokia employees, Jolla is a company that aims to carry on the MeeGo legacy. Its open-source Sailfish OS has now reached version 2.0 and it’s getting ready to debut on the crowd-funded Jolla Tablet. We had a chance to spend some time with the slate so we now have a better idea of how the eccentric platform behaves on its reasonably capable hardware.

The Jolla Tablet comes with a 7.85” display of 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution which we found to be rather good. Its brightness levels are very high and the viewing angles were great – despite some contrast compression we were still able to make out what’s on the screen even at extreme angles. Read more »

Qualcomm unveils next-gen fingerprint ultrasonic scanner – Snapdragon Sense ID

Qualcomm has introduced a new breakthrough in the fingerprint scanning technology called Snapdragon Sense ID.

Unlike the competitive solutions, the new tech relies on ultrasonic 3D scanning and works through all kind of surfaces such as glass, sapphire, metal, aluminum and plastic. Read more »

Sony announced the new Xperia Z4 Tablet and the Xperia M4 Aqua smartphone. The Z4 Tablet is the company’s latest flagship tablet while the M4 Aqua is more of a mid-range offering.

The Xperia Z4 Tablet has a 10.1-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 810 processor, 32GB memory, stereo speakers, 8 megapixel camera, and digital noise cancelling. It’s also IP68 certified, making it waterproof and dust resistant. Sony also made a Bluetooth keyboard for it to be used as a notebook. Read more »

BBM for Android and iOS gets an array of new features

Blackberry has announced that a new version of their popular messenger app is coming for both Android and iOS shortly. The new build will bring a lot of interesting features and make for an improved experience, tailored to use product-specific features, such as Apple’s Touch Id and the Android Wear platform.

Some of the more interesting additions to the app include a new Custom PIN feature. Users will be able to purchase a custom 6-8 character alpha-numeric pin form the BBM store for $1.99 a month. Another new opt-in payment option is the removal of advertisements from the messenger feed, which will set you back an additional $0.99 a month. This all sound way too price, but Blackberry does need all the income it can get right now. Read more »

And while beastly Exynos processors and futuristic build and design are on everybody’s minds the people over at IKEA ate definitely most excited about another new feature of the S flagship – wireless charging.

What started out as a rather clunky, inefficient and even rather dangerous charging method, has really picked up recently, with major standards, such as Qi really pushing the technology along. Everything seems to be pointing toward a cleaner and wire-free future and the Swedish furniture giant is quick to capitalize on the new trend. Lenovo has chimed in on the MWC 2015 horizon with the launch of a slate trio – meet the Android-running Tab 2 A10-70, Tab 2 A8 and Windows-booting Ideapad MIIX 300.

The Lenovo Tab 2 A10 packs a 10.1″ IPS display of 1080p resolution and under the hood features a MediaTek chipset with a 64-bit quad-core CPU and 2GB of RAM. Lenovo says its 7,200mAh battery can last up to 10 hours of non-stop usage. It’s quite sleek, too, with a weight of 509 grams and 8.9mm thick frame. Read more »

Samsung unveils a refined Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge

Samsung introduced a new version of the Oculus-powered Gear VR Innovator Edition headset. The new Gear VR is compatible with the newly announced Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge and is 15% smaller.

The Galaxy VR Innovator Edition with Oculus technology is already available for purchase globally for $199. The headset is compatible only with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phablet, but Samsung and Oculus will be launching a Galaxy S6-compatible edition as well. Read more »

Samsung launches Samsung Pay service for mobile payments

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge were announced today in Barcelona. They both feature a new mobile service for payments called Samsung Pay and yes, you’ve guessed it right, is a competitor to Apple Pay.

Samsung Pay works with NFC and a newly developed technology called MST – Magnetic Secure Transmission. The MST will allow the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge owners to use their phones on most of the existing terminals and merchants won’t need to upgrade their payment solution. Read more »
