Apple’s iCloud has gained a tool that allows you to check a used iDevice and see if it has been reported stolen.

You just need to type in your device’s IMEI (usually located on the back of an Apple product or in settings) and the page will give you information if the device is activated under another Apple ID. Read more »

Tweetbot, the most popular third party Twitter client for iOS, has been updated for the new iOS 8 as well as the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

The list of iOS 8 related improvements include lockscreen notification shortcuts, where you can now slide notifications on the lockscreen to access additional functions, interactive notifications that pop down from the top and lets you reply instantly without leaving your current app, and sharing sheet support for sharing via Tweetbot. Nokia had previously announced its plans to release a version of HERE Maps for Android, but only for Samsung devices for now. Although the app is yet to officially release, somebody managed to get their hands on the APK and unsurprisingly, it works on any Android device running 4.0 and above.

Nokia HERE Maps is a fully featured navigation utility, and has all the features, including turn by turn voice navigation. It also has something unique, where you can download maps for entire cities, which can then be used offline or in areas with no network. Read more »

Apple iOS 8 was released to all compatible devices on September 17, but it wasn’t a smooth launch at all. The iOS 8 was plagued by lots of bugs, Apple even removed all Health-related apps due to a bug in its HealthKit. This is where the iOS 8.0.1 update came to help, but while it may fixed the Health app issues, it broke the cell reception and Touch ID on quite a few phones.

So, the iOS 8.0.1 update was quickly taken down and iOS 8.0.2 appeared two days later to fix the Heath app and what the 8.0.1 update broke. Many users disappointed by the iOS 8 behavior decided to revert back to iOS 7.1.2, but this option now no longer available. Read more »

With iOS 8.0.2 now seeding, apps using the Apple HealthKit suite have started appearing in the App Store.

The first of the apps to appear in the App Store is FitPort, which gives you all available health information to you while syncing with HealthKit. The new health-related framework also allows you to be very picky on what information you share with third-party apps. Read more »

Many months ago in February, Facebook made some big news when it announced plans to acquire successful messaging company WhatsApp for a mind-melting $19 billion. But the deal still has to be approved by regulatory agencies across the world, including the EU’s competition authority. That apparently shouldn’t concern Facebook, as the EU is rumored to give it the go-ahead “unconditionally”.

That means the company won’t have to make any concessions and the deal will simply be approved as is, since Facebook reportedly managed to convince the European Commission that it would have no anticompetitive effect. A week ago, Google unveiled the Chrome OS support for certain Android apps. Now, thanks to a custom tool for Chrome OS, you can install any Android app you like, not just a select few.

Called chrome-apk, the tool requires a bit of tinkering to install, but is well worth it if you don’t have the intention to wait for Google to promote the the new Chrome OS App Runtime out of beta. Read more »

A bug in the HealthKit suite is forcing Apple to remove all apps using the framework from the App Store. The HealtKit enabled apps were supposed to launch with iOS 8 today, but this is postponed indefinitely.

Another month has passed, so it’s time for another ‘M’ release by CyanogenMod. The popular custom ROM for Android is now at M10 for CyanogenMod 11.0, based on Android 4.4 KitKat.

The new software adds support for Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S5, but it also drops support for the Verizon and Sprint versions of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus from yesteryear. Read more »

This isn’t a joke! Apple has approved the Vizzywig 4K app for iPhone 5s, which enables 4K video recording with 24 fps on the 2013 smartphone. It costs $999.99 (€899.99) and works only on iPhone 5s with 32GB or 64GB storage.

The app captures 24 burst images per second in 4K resolution and then stitches them together in just 1s footage. This means you’ll lose about 72MB for each second of your video. This explains the requirement for the 32GB+ iPhone model! Read more »
