Remember the old-school IBM ThinkPad notebooks (or laptops as we used to call them back then)? This was before the brand was acquired by Lenovo, who still makes ThinkPads but they have now evolved with the times.

In his blog post, David Hill, Vice President, Lenovo Corporate Identity & Design, wonders about the possibilities of making a retro-style ThinkPad again, but with modern hardware. It will have all the trappings of the older models, including a blue enter key, 7 row classic keyboard, 16:10 aspect ratio screen, multi-color ThinkPad logo, dedicated volume controls, rubberized paint, exposed screws, lots of status LEDs, and more. Lenovo unveiled three new laptops at Lenovo Tech World in Beijing. Two new Z-series offer high performance and even a 3D camera, while the new Ideapad takes aim at the Chromebooks.

Smartphones serving as the brain of a laptop always sounded like a great idea, until someone actually makes one. Undeterred by the cold reception of the Motorola Atrix and its laptop dock and the low profile of the Asus Padfone, Samsung has patented a Galaxy Note-like device, which docks into a laptop host.

In the ever-so-dynamic race of everyday life, mobility has become one of the key aspects of our personal tech. Ultrabooks have definitely gotten a long way in this respect but while some, like Apple are achieving ultra-portability at the expense of performance, others, like Lenovo, prove that there is really no room for compromises in today’s tech world.

The LaVie Z and LaVie Z 360 are a true testament to this. Both laptops are incredibly compact and measure 12.56″ x 0.67″ x 8.35″. They are also incredibly light – the LaVie Z weighs in at 1.87 lbs for a base model, while the more-advanced LaVie Z 360, complete with a touchscreen and flappable hinge, starts at 2.04 lbs. As most of you surely know, today is the first day of Microsoft’s biggest annual developer conference. Build 2014 promises to bring a lot of new information on Windows 10, as well as other exciting Microsoft projects. But the conference might bring about some interesting hardware news as well. There have been a lot of rumors floating around about the next Surface device. Seeing how the Sufrace 3 is still quite new, its successor is unlikely to come anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean that Microsoft can’t share some information about the future of the tablet line today. Google made the new version of its Chromebook Pixel laptop official last month, but only for the US. Today though it was time for the company to announce availability for the UK.

So if you’re in the UK and have been craving a new Pixel, you can now mark April 21 in your calendar. That’s when the device will make its debut across the pond. The Samsung 850 EVO SSDs came a while back, but they were available only in 2.5″ form-factors. Now Samsung has introduced the mSATA and M.2 versions. M.2 is the successor to mSATA and new super-thin laptops – like the ones these SSDs are targeting – are already switching to the new standard.

Google announced the smallest member of the Chrome OS gang to date. Dubbed Chromebit, the Asus-made device is a tiny HDMI dongle, which turns any compatible display in to a Chrome OS computer.

Last month Google inadvertently confirmed that it’s working on a new Chromebook Pixel, and today that has become reality. The company unveiled its latest laptop, and it looks almost 100% like the original from 2013.

However, there are many changes under the hood, and all for the better. First off, the new Pixel is faster than its predecessor, offering you a choice between a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i5 processor or a 2.4 GHz Core i7. Read more »

Along with the spanking new MacBook, Apple also updated the hardware on the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro with Retina display, which are now much better for the same price.

The MacBook Air gets a new fifth generation (Broadwell) Intel Core i5 5250U processor with dual core 1.6GHz CPU (Turbo Boost up to 2.7GHz) and HD 6000 on-board graphics. You can also configure it with an Intel Core i7 5650U with dual core 2.2GHz CPU (Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz) and the same HD 6000 graphics. There is also Thunderbolt 2, with twice the bandwidth of up to 20Gbps up and down simultaneously. These changes are available are common to both the 11-inch and 13-inch, but the 13-inch model also gets 2x faster flash storage. Read more »

Apple will help you go around the shortage of ports in the new Macbook with a dedicated accessory. Priced at $79, the USB-C multipart adapter will add a trio of ports to the sleek new notebook.

Apple has just announced the new 12″ MacBook. The company has managed to make the notebook even thinner than the MacBook Air measuring just 13.1mm at its thinnest point.

The 12″ Retina display features a 2304 x 1440 pixel resolution. The new MacBook weighs just 907 grams (2lbs), is all-metal and because of its thinness has been stripped of most of its ports. There’s now just one USB-C port on the left for both charging and connectivity and a 3.5mm headphone jack on the right. Read more »
