We have been hearing a lot about the Transformer Prime. First ASUS chairman Jonney Shih displayed it at AsiaD, then some more live shots surfaced, then came the FCC images, after that the benchmarks and the last we heard of it we found out that it will be delayed and coming in December instead. Amazon has just revealed the launch date for their new Kindle range, which now includes the Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Touch 3G and the Android-based Kindle Fire. Tuesday, November 15 is the day when you will be able to get your hands on one of Amazon’s shiny new Kindles.

They have also announced that the Kindles will be available in 16,000 locations across the US, from retail stores such as Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Staples, Sam’s Club, RadioShack, Office Depot, etc. And of course, there is the Amazon online store, if you’re too lazy to go out and buy it. You’d be surprised to know, battery life tests are the most time consuming and the most criticized articles that we do. And in the same time, they are of high interest to the readers. The previous iteration of our battery test required that we have the phone around for at least a week after the reviewing routine is over. It included many different tasks, which took quite a lot of time and meant that the tested devices couldn’t be used for anything else for days in a row (so that the test is as controlled as possible).

The upcoming Windows 8 is a huge jump ahead in terms of touchscreen usability, but some worry that’s at the cost of non-touchscreen usability. Well, Synaptics are showing off a cool concept which uses the touchpad on a laptop to mimic a touchscreen.

The concept is called Synaptics Gesture Suite (SGS) and works surprisingly well for some gestures – switching between app with a horizontal swipe, docking apps to the screen, using tabs in Internet Explorer all seem highly usable and cool. Read more »

Yesterday, Charlie Miller released a video about an app that exploited a flaw in Apple’s code-signing on iOS devices, that allowed his app to run malicious code to run on an iOS device. The app was actually submitted to Apple under the guise of a stock market app and managed to get through their vetting process.

When Apple learned of the real purpose of this app, they immediately pulled it from the App Store and later also removed Miller from the iOS developer program. Can’t say this was unexpected as Miller clearly violated Apple’s policies. Read more »

Barnes&Noble has just announced an upgraded version of the widely popular Nook Color. Unassumingly called the Nook Tablet, it uses the same 7″ VividView IPS LCD screen with 1024×600 pixels resolution. It has nearly 180 degrees viewing angles and is fully laminated for minimal reflections and glares.

The Nook Tablet uses the Nook Color body, but has a completely different core – a TI OMAP 4430 chipset with a 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU and 1GB RAM. The internal storage is 16GB, expandable via microSD card slot. The new hardware means that HD video playback is easily possible with the Nook tablet. Read more »

We all know that the iPad is still the tablet to beat, but the kind of dominance it enjoys in the tablet market doesn’t cease to amaze us. According to the latest estimates, provided by the market analyst from Canaccord Genuity, the Apple iPad and iPad2 will account for 65% of all slates shipped in 2011.

Despite the increased competition, the iPad managed to stand its ground and Apple will complete the year as the largest tablet manufacturer by selling north of 39 million units. According to the estimates, Samsung will come in second, shipping just 5 million slates, whereas Asus will somewhat surprisingly catch third place with 3 million tablets shipped. Read more »
