Oculus Rift retail launch may slip into 2016

The launch of the retail version of the Oculus Rift has always been a nebulous “soon” and it may be undergoing another revision. Until recently the target was by the end of 2015, but the launch may slip into next year.

HTC and Valve are hoping to bring their Vive VR headset for the holidays this year and may be cheering at the delay.

Anyway, the Oculus Rift was mentioned during Facebook’s recent Q1 fiscal report (the social network acquired Oculus in March last year). Facebook CFO David Wehner said the VR headset is still firmly in the development stage and that it’s “very early to be talking about large shipment volumes.”

So he didn’t outright say no retail Rift in 2014, but if Oculus was on track for a Q4 launch then it would have made a nice highlight to throw in the financial report. Until then Oculus tech will be inside the prototype units, as well as the Samsung Gear VR and Gear VR Innovator Edition.
