Android is closer to iOS in mobile browsing than ever

Android is the undisputed leader in global smartphone shipments with iOS a distant second but when it comes to mobile browsing iOS is king and has been for some time now, despite Android’s overwhelming lead in number of active devices and users.

But things are changing with Android rapidly closing the gap behind iOS and now sitting just 1.86 percentage points behind Apple’s OS. The trend of Android catching up and finally surpassing iOS is nothing new – Android had less apps but finally caught up and surpassed Apple, Google Play is also closing-in in terms of revenue from apps.

The mobile browsing report comes from Net Applications, which looks at the numbers in the month of June, where iOS holds 45.61% with 43.75% for Android. Symbian has an impressive 2.73%, better than the Windows Phone’s 1.99% and BlackBerry’s 1.36%.

Compare that to a year ago and iOS controlled 57.56% with a lowly 24.66% for Android – that’s a downfall of 11.95 percentage points for Apple and a huge 19.09 pp leap for Android. And if you want to go overboard with the memory lane imagine back in 2009 when Apple had 39.02% of the mobile browsing cake and Android had just 2.59%. Times have changed indeed.

Android and iOS have bumped shoulders for some time now. One side boasts about its impressive install base while the other claims its products are used more in comparison. We guess the war is far from over but statistically Android is taking an huge lead.
