Just less than a month after Facebook announced Lite, a lightweight Android app aimed at emerging markets, the company officially launched it in India and Philippines.
The app uses less data and hence works well even when your bandwidth is at a minimum, the social networking company claims. It is less than 1MB in size (430 KB to be precise), which makes it quick to download and load. Read more »
Facebook has released its latest employee diversity report, revealing that there has been little progress in the area since it reported the numbers last time.
As per the report, 91% of the company’s employees are white or Asian. These include 94% of the tech employees, 86% of the non-tech employees, and 94% of the senior leadership. Read more »
Back in January last year, Google announced that it has developed a smart contact lens prototype containing a glucose sensor. While the company had earlier said the lens won’t be available to the general public for at-least next five years, it now looks like the wearable device may hit the market before 2019.
This was revealed in a recently uncovered patent application that showed off potential designs for how the search giant could package a smart contact lens. When reached for comment, a Google representative said that product releases can’t be deduced from patent applications. Read more »
Facebook is currently testing a new iOS photo uploader which will allow users to put Snapchat-like filters, text, and stickers on their pictures, according to a TechCrunch report.
Facebook emulating Snapchat’s features shouldn’t really come as a surprise given that the world’s largest social network in 2013 tried to acquire the latter for $3 billion but the offer was turned down. Facebook’s Slingshot app is also widely perceived to be a Snapchat clone. Read more »
Earlier this week, Pebble opened pre-orders for the Time smartwatch. While pre-orders stateside are exclusive to Best Buy, outside of the US, potential customers can pre-order the smartwatch from Pebble’s own online store. However, if you live in Canada, you can now also place your pre-order on Best Buy.
The online retailer is selling the black, red, and white colour variants of the wearable device for CAD 250, which translates into around $203. It’s worth mentioning that over in the US, Pebble Time will set you back $200. Read more »
Disney World has announced that it’s banning selfie-sticks from its theme parks, a decision that the company says was taken keeping in mind the safety of visitors.
“We strive to provide a great experience for the entire family, and unfortunately selfie-sticks have become a growing safety concern for both our guests and cast,” a company spokesperson said. The ban will come into effect at Disney World and California’s Disneyland on June 30, and at the company’s parks in Paris and Hong Kong on July 1. Read more »
Facebook has launched a new feature that allows you to easily find and share Web links on the social network. Dubbed Add a Link, the feature is currently only available for iPhone users, but will eventually launch on Android and the company’s Messenger app as well.
“Now, whenever you want to share a specific web link in your posts, just tap the new link icon, type in a few keywords to search for a link from our index of posts, and share it,” the company said. So effectively, the feature makes sure that users won’t have to leave the Facebook app when searching for Web links. Read more »
Just over a year after it hit the 300 million milestone, US-based cloud storage company Dropbox has announced that it now has more than 400 million registered users worldwide. However, the company did not disclose how many of them are monthly active users.
“Today, 400 million people around the world are using Dropbox. They sync 1.2 billion files every day, create over 100,000 new shared folders and links every hour, and make 4,000 edits every second,” the company said in a blog post. “They launch startups, create award-winning documentaries, and build their dream homes.” Read more »
Netflix is planning to launch its online TV and movies subscription service in India by 2016, according to a Times Of India report.
As per the report, the service will arrive with some of the iconic Indian TV shows including Buniyaad, Nukkad, and Malgudi Days, and will be available on both iOS and Android devices. Read more »
The Android version of popular messaging app WhatsApp now allows you to search across all your conversations. According to an Android Police report, the feature was possibly added in the version 2.12.134 of the app.
Previously, you could only perform a text search in a single WhatsApp conversation, but now when you start a search in the app’s Chats tab, you are also presented with results from within various conversations in addition to your contacts. Read more »
The Android version of Twitter’s live video streaming app Periscope – which was launched last month – has scored yet another update. It bumps the application to version 1.0.2, and brings along several new features as well as bug fixes.
The updated app now not only lets you edit your profile information, including your photo, display name, and description, but also allows you to watch your personal broadcast history. Australia has passed a controversial anti-piracy law allowing right holders to approach a Federal Court judge and get foreign-hosted websites that have the “primary purpose” of “facilitating” copyright infringement blocked at the ISP-level.
Dubbed Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill 2015, the bill – which was introduced back in March this year – got passed the Australian Senate by a vote of 37-13. Read more »

Sony has announced the pricing and availability details of its X900C and X910C series 4K Ultra HD TVs. While the former is set to arrive beginning next month, the latter will be available for purchase sometime this summer.
As for the price, the 55-inch X900C model will carry a tag of $2,499, while the 65-inch counterpart will set you back $3,999. On the other hand, the 75-inch X910C model will cost $5,499. Read more »
Apple has launched a replacement program for the 3TB hard drive used in 27-inch iMac systems that were sold between December 2012 and September 2013. The company said it has determined that the hard drive “may fail under certain conditions.”
