iFixit tears the Mac Pro down to find it highly repairable

The 2013 Mac Pro is a beautiful piece of tech and when it was announced we were quite pessimistic about its prospects of down-the-road upgrades and how repairable it would be. Thankfully, the iFixit team has proven them wrong by giving the Mac Pro its usual teardown treatment.

In its teardown iFixit has found out that the Mac Pro isn’t too hard to disassemble and once you do, you can easily replace the RAM and fill the four slots with SDRAM of your choosing. Interestingly, the SSD is also held up by only one screw (a regular one at that).

Also replaceable is the Intel Xeon processor, which can save you well over $1000 if you pass on the 12-core chip and choose another, cheaper alternative. With a 450 watts power supply, the Mac Pro is proving itself as a very energy-efficient machine, considering its powerful hardware.

Overall, iFixit rates the Mac Pro’s repairability 8 out of 10. Not only is the main and only fan easy to access and replace but the team is also astonished at just how compact, yet modular the whole thing is. Nevertheless, iFixit advises owners that potential teardown attempts be done with the proper tools and the attention that a $3,000 piece of equipment requires.
