Google working on KitKat battery drain fix for Nexus 5

A faulty camera process on the Nexus 5 has resulting in a significant number of people reporting of excessive battery drain during standby on the device.

Google has confirmed that a maintenance release that will hopefully fix the bug is on the way. Other Qualcomm SoC-powered smartphones running Android KitKat 4.4.2 that may also be suffering from the bug will have to wait for a fix directly from the respective manufacturer.

The bug in question involves the mm-qcamera-daemon process that’s evoked by certain apps that make use of the smartphone’s camera, like Skype. The problem occurs when the process continues to run at a high rate of CPU usage, even when the app is closed.

Google has pointed out that the bug most often occurs when called by the Skype app, although other apps that call the same process could also trigger the issue.

There’s no word on when the maintenance release will become available, but given the sheer number of complaints on Google’s developer forums and the high profile nature of the device, it will likely be sooner rather than later.

For now, restarting your device is the only way to fix the issue, and if you can live without Skype, uninstalling the app until the fix arrives should also help.
