Google turns 14 – Happy Birthday!

14 years ago a small but effective search engine came to prominence on the domain www.google.com. The rest is history.

Today marks the 14th year of existence for the tech giant, and it’s celebrating with one of its trademark homepage doodles.

Google was first envisioned by Standford students Larry Page and Sergey Brin as part of a research project which attempted to catalog a web page by the number of pages that backlink to it. The result was the PageRank system, which coincidentally provided much more accurate search results than those of commercial search portals at the time, such as Yahoo! or Excite.com.

Google later went on to offer its IPO in 2004, just after reaching its peak in terms of search engine dominance, at which time it accounted for just under 85% of all searches made on the internet.

Today, Google remains one of the most successful tech companies in history, and stands firmly by its declaration to be “a company that does good things for the world even if we forgo some short term gains.”

So, from us at GSMArena.com, happy birthday Google! Thanks for making the internet a better place!
