This is something new even for us. We have had cases of testing the same device with different Android version, but the Oppo N1 is the first smartphone that we’re going to test with two completely different Android ROMs. The phone sells with either Oppo’s own ColorOS or with CyanogenMod 10.2 out of the box and you are free to change between the two later on, too.
Originally, we tested the Oppo N1 with ColorUI based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The 5.9″ smartphone did excellently, posting a 79 hours endurance rating. Now, it’s CyanogenMod’s turn with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate what its capable of when it comes to battery management.
Based on AOSP, the CyanogenMod is built on top of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, so it has an edge on ColorUI by having a more recent release of the OS. We’re yet to see how that balances with the custom-built features, which Cyanogen prides itself with. Let’s see how it makes use of the monstrous 3,610mAh battery inside the N1.
First things first, we commence with the 3G talk time test. The ColorOS version of the Oppo N1 set the bar quite high with 25 hours and 1 minute. The CyanogenMod variant, however, didn’t even come close to that time. In fact, with a time result of 16 hours and 40 minutes, it’s nearly 10 hours less than its ColorOS brother.

Finally, we come to video playback, where the Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod on board once again falls behind ColorOS. Scoring a time of exactly 10 hours, it’s an hour and 15 minutes shorter of its own score.

You’ve probably spotted a trend here. Sadly, the stand-by component of the test followed suit and wasn’t on par than what the Oppo N1 running ColorOS managed. As a result, the CyanogenMod Oppo N1 managed an endurance rating of just 59 hours.
That’s a whopping 20 hours less, meaning the Cyanogen team has some work to do in order to squeeze more battery life out of the N1. A possible explanation for the subpar result of the CM Oppo N1 could be the not so efficient use of the phone’s resources or the excess background processes of the custom ROM. Here’s hoping that when CyanogenMod 11 arrives for the phablet, it’ll bring the neccessary fixes to improve the N1′s battery life.
