Asus Fonepad 8 tablet launches in India with voice call support

Today Asus launched a new tablet in the Indian market. It’s the Fonepad 8, model number FE380CG, which was originally unveiled last June. Not only has it been introduced in the subcontinent, but it’s already available to buy.

The device has been priced at INR 13,999, which roughly translates into $227 or €195 at the current exchange rates. For that amount you’re getting a tablet, but you can also think about the Fonepad 8 as a huge phone – since it has voice calling features.

You can buy one of these from Flipkart or from Asus experience stores, in black or gold. Asus’ entire Fonepad line is about trying to convince the mainstream consumer that it’s ok to make phone calls from a tablet, but whether that strategy has worked at all is up for debate.

Either way, if you want to hold the Fonepad 8 to your ear and talk through it, you can, thanks to the built-in 42.2 Mbps HSPA support, as well as the needed earpiece on the front. It’s also got dual-SIM functionality, if you’re looking for that.

The rest of the specs aren’t earth-shattering by any stretch of the imagination, which should have been obvious from the price point. The Fonepad 8 has an 8-inch 1,280×800 touchscreen, an Intel Atom Z3530 chipset with a 1.33 GHz quad-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD expansion, a 5 MP rear camera, and a 2 MP front snapper. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat.
