A few days ago some people spotted a new feature in Google Maps for Android – Explore Nearby. And now the search giant has made it official, though it also works on iOS.
Explore Nearby lets you discover stuff that’s close to you with the tap of one button (which is located in the bottom right corner of the map).
What’s neat is that the information that’s presented to you by Explore Nearby is dynamic – it changes based on context such as time of day or weather. Furthermore, you can decide what you want “nearby” to mean, and in easy to use terms such as how long it would take you to walk or drive there.
You can use Explore Nearby based on your current location, but it also works when you browse through other neighborhoods and cities on the map, meaning you can even find out stuff to do on your vacation or city break. However, you’ll apparently get the best results if you’re signed in to Google and have location reporting and history turned on.
When you arrive at a location you’ve found through Explore Nearby, you can do even more if you have an Android device – including getting to know the location better and seeing reviews about it, or you could simply save the place for later.
The new feature should show up for everyone using Google Maps on Android and iOS this week, if it hasn’t already.
