iOS6 jailbroken thanks to redsn0w, only tethered for now

The popular jailbreaker’s tool redsn0w has received a major update today. The new version is not only capable of jailbreaking iOS6 on A4 devices (like the iPhone 4), but it also comes with enhanced functionality regarding iOS5-to-iOS5 restores, now that Apple doesn’t allow those any longer.

Unfortunately, the jailbreak solution is tethered-only, meaning that once you use it, you would have to connect your device to redsn0w every time you reboot it. I’m not sure though, whether the device would at all boot without redsn0w or whether it would just boot sans the jailbreak.

For me, the tethered nature of these jailbreaks has always been a deal breaker, so I avoid them until they get to the untethered phase. Still, if you are willing enough, the possibility is there.

As usual, you might want to stay away from those major releases for a day or two, until the devs iron out the inevitable kinks and release a bugfixed version. If you rely on ultrasn0w to get your signal (meaning you are one of the software unlockers), then you have got to know that ultrasn0w is still not updated to work under iOS6. If you need hactivation for your 3GS or iPhone 4, redsn0w will take care of that for you (untethered!).

There is still no jailbreak method discovered for newer iOS devices.
