SkyDrive mobile app updated, Windows and Mac OS desktop apps make first appearance

Microsoft has just updated its SkyDrive app on iOS and Windows Phone to version 2.0. The application now supports the iPad, including the Retina screen on the latest one, and there are other new tidbits meant to make the life of the users of both platforms a lot easier.

To start with, you can now choose multiple images or videos to upload from your device. The full lists follows below.

Update: Microsoft has also released desktop apps for Windows and MacOS allowing you a local access to your files in lieu of what Dropbox does. These aps are just preview versions, but they are a clear sign of what’s coming. Now it’s Google’s turn to come up with a stronger card.

Technically, the iOS version is a more major upgrade if we count the added iPad support. Here’s the full iOS changelog:

  • Updated to support iPad, including the new iPad with Retina display.
  • Choose multiple photos or videos to upload from your iPhone or iPad.
  • Share your files and photos—send a link in email or get a link you can copy and paste.
  • Manage your files—move, delete, rename, or create new folders.
  • Open your SkyDrive files in other iOS apps.

SkyDrive is tightly integrated with Windows Phone so the update on this platform is a welcome improvement too. And here’s the official changelog for the Windows Phone version:

  • Access all of your SkyDrive content including files shared with you.
  • View recently used documents.
  • Upload photos or videos from your phone.
  • Share your files and photos—send a link in email or get a link you can copy and paste.
  • Manage your files—move, delete, rename, or create new folders.

Update: As part of SkyDrive’s new desktop offensive, Microsoft have rewritten the service storage options. Instead of the previous 25GB, new users will only get 7GB for free. Existing users will only be allowed to keep their 25GB, if they log in to their accounts and accept “the free upgrade to 25GB that’s available to for loyal users for a limited period of time”.

So will you give SkyDrive a try or you’ll stick to Dropbox, Box.net, iCloud and the likes?
