The Sony Xperia ZL went through our battery tests and we’ve got all sorts of interesting numbers to share with you.
The smartphone has a similar battery to its Xperia Z sibling – the 2370mAh capacity of the Xperia ZL unit is just 40 mAh more than the waterproof flagship offers. Yet, Sony has rated the Xperia ZL to last a tad shorter than the Xperia Z for both stand-by and talk time and as we found out there are in fact some differences in real-life performance..
Just to clear the air the Xperia ZL was tested without Stamina mode so its results are directly comparable to the other tested smartphones.
When it came to talk time the Xperia ZL posted an impressive 15 hours and 22 minutes, which is really great, but a whole 51 minutes below the Xperia Z. .

Web browsing endurance on the Sony Xperia ZL also turned out pretty close at 6:04 hours of play while the Xperia Z has just 33 minutes more than that. It’s a pretty average score, some way off the nearly 10 hour benchmark set by the HTC One and the iPhone 5. As for the difference between the two Sony flagships – when we reviewed the Xperia ZL we found its screen to be slightly different from that of the Xperia Z (probably due to unit variation), so that might as well be the reason behind it.

Things were far closer when we came to the video playback test, where the Xperia ZL posted 5:28, coming just 11 minutes shy of the taller Xperia Z. Both results aren’t all that impressive although the Xperia ZL will still cover most of your long-hour fligh.
It’s important to note that the Xperia ZL has a tad brighter screen with notably more contrast then the Xperia Z so it’s impressive that it got as close with pretty much the same battery capacity.

When it comes to stand-by the Sony Xperia ZL efficiency turned out average so its overall endurance rating was about in line with its performance in the three tests above. When we draw the line we’re left with a decent 44 hours endurance, meaning that with an hour of calling, browsing and video playback each per day, you should need to find a power chord every 44 hours. That’s 4 hours shorter than than the Xperia Z manages under the same usage pattern, but this kind of difference will rarely be felt in real-life usage.
