The Sony Xperia E3 has Sony’s complete confidence of capable battery life. The manufacturer boasts about 2 days of power autonomy on the Xperia E3′s product page and we decided to hold them to their word.
Before we take a look at the numbers let’s get the specs out of the way. The Sony Xperia E3 packs a Snapdragon 400 chipset, 4.5″ display of 480x854px resolution and Android 4.4.2 KitKat, all powered by a 2,330mAh battery unit.
As usual we break down the performance of the device in four categories – talk time, web browsing and video playback, and then we combine the stand-by to get an endurance rating – the number of hours the phone can go if you do an hour of each before it needs a charge.
Talk time was impressive on the Xperia E3 – the second most impressive of its battery credentials. It managed to squeeze 14 and a half hours of talking from a single charge. That’s a little better than both Motorola Moto G’s we’ve tested but still far away from both the Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua.
Still 14:28 hours is a great result to have and means you’re unlikely to be left mid-call searching for a charger.
The Sony Xperia E3 came very close to a 10 hour browsing session over Wi-Fi, a great score. It wasn’t able to catch the Moto G 4G from last year but outclassed the Xperia M2 Aqua and is about on par with its Nokia Lumia competition – all around 10 hours of browsing.
Finally we arrive at the cinema – the video playback test, which we perform at 10% sound and 50% brightness. On these terms the Sony Xperia E3 scored a decent 8 and a half hours of constant movie watching. That covers you for just about any scenario where you need to watch a lot of movies on your phone so the Xperia E3 has got you covered. Having some charge left at the end of your commute is a whole different topic.
After the tests we come to the stand-by – the Sony Xperia E3 was capable of some 500h and above hours of stand-by time, which leaves us at a 75h endurance score. While the Sony Xperia E3 was either on par or slightly worse than its main competition for the three tests above it managed to outperform them in the stand-by test leading to a great score for its class.
