Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 LTE battery test

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 in our office is the Snapdragon 800-powered version, which features full voice call functionality. This used to be reserved for Samsung’s 7″ tablets, but we’re glad to see Samsung enable this on the larger tablets as well. Users are paying for that LTE modem anyway, might as well get the full benefits.

The Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 features a large 8,220mAh Li-Ion battery and uses a chipset found in phones. This makes the sharp 10.1″ screen the primary weight on the battery relative to phones.

And it really shows when the display is off. The talk time of the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 crushes all phones and tablets as can be expected. We don’t have many voice call-enabled tablets in our battery test database as those are quite rare. Anyway, you won’t run the tablet’s battery flat by calls, that’s the takeaway here.

Web browsing is a more standard use case for a tablet. Here the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 offers solid performance of a little over 9 hours. The Apple iPad Air (which coincidentally has the same battery capacity as the Tab Pro 10.1) lasted an hour longer and its screen is brighter at 50% (the setting we use for the test).

While the screens of both tablets have nearly the same surface area, the Galaxy screen has 30% more pixels, which does affect power draw. The Tab Pro 10.1 posted virtually the same time as its Note Pro 12.2 sibling (bigger screen, bigger battery) and beat the Tab Pro 8.4 by a wide margin.

In the web browser test, the difference between the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 and the iPad Air is smaller, standing at just 40 minutes. The Note Pro 12.2 juggernaut is over two hours behind. That one had an Exynos chipset, so this could be down to video decoder efficiency, not just the screen size and battery capacity.

The endurance rating for the Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 is a whopping 101 hours. It won’t get you through a full work week, but unless you use it as laptop replacement, Monday to Friday will take just one charge under our standardized usage pattern – an hour of calls, an hour of web browsing and an hour of video watching per day.

That’s not quite likely the usage that a tablet like the Tab Pro 10.1 will be seeing, but that’s our set test formula that we use to compare difference devices. And if you are using it as a laptop replacement, the Tab Pro 10.1 will likely outlast even most ultrabooks (a form factor that puts strong emphasis on battery life). In a pinch you can also put your phone’s SIM card (most devices these days use microSIM), in case your tablet SIM is data-only.

While a bit behind the iPad Air in the web and video tests, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 has the added advantage of voice calls and posts very competitive times in the other two categories as well. It’s also great that Samsung managed to reduce the weight of the Tab Pro 10.1 compared to the Note Pro 10.1 without reducing the battery capacity.
