Samsung Galaxy Note Edge battery life test

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is largely based on the Note 4, save for the unique curved screen. This reduced the internal volume, which in turn made the battery smaller – 3,000mAh instead of 3,220mAh in the Galaxy Note 4.

The screen is different too as is some of the software, which have a much bigger impact on battery life than those lost 220mAh.

We start of with a call test. The Note 4 is a great performer, but the Galaxy Note Edge is behind by 7 whole hours. This still puts it ahead of the majority of devices, but talk time should have been affected the least.

It turns out that it’s web browsing that took the smallest hit – it still lasts about one and a half hours less than its flat-screened sibling. The time of about 9 hours is below the norm for a modern flagship, here we suspect the slightly darker screen of the Galaxy Note Edge had to work harder.

The video player is a new app – it uses the curved Edge screen to position its controls, leaving the tack-sharp QHD main display entirely to the video. This app also loses a whopping 7 hours compared to the Note 4. This is much worse percentagewise compared to the hit the Galaxy Note Edge took in the call test.

The final endurance rating works out to 68 hours or just short of three full days. For comparison the Galaxy Note 4 manages 87 hours. Still, you’ll get to the evening of the third day with moderate usage and two days of heavy usage. Killing the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge in one day will take quite the effort.

Note that the phablet features Quick Charge 2.0 – it will push the battery from 0% to 50% in just half an hour so quick top-ups before you go out are quite easy. Quick Charge works only with 2A chargers (like the one included in the box) and the charge rate slows down the closer the battery gets to full.

Samsung could improve the battery life with a software update – if nothing else Android 5.0 Lollipop includes Project Volta, which features multiple power-saving strategies.

We have to note that we reset the Galaxy Note Edge and reran the tests as the initial standby performance was rather poor. We’re not sure if it was a third-party app or what but the second time around the Note Edge cut its standby power usage by half.
