Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 802 and 602A SoC for smart TVs and in car infotainment

Qualcomm has officially taken wraps of its Snapdragon 802 processor that is designed exclusively for streaming 4K content on your televisions. The semi-conductor giant also introduced its Snapdragon 602A chipset to improve the infotainment in cars.

The Snapdragon 802 is a SoC with quad-core CPU that shares a lot with the company’s Snapdragon 800 and 805 mobile processors. Qualcomm’s newest addition comes with a quad-core Krait 1.8 GHz CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, two-stream, dual-band 802.11 ac connectivity, AllJoyn integration and Snapdragon’s studio access content protection feature.

Apart from streaming 4K content on your televisions, the chipset will also bring a much improved app experience, according to Tim McDonough, Qualcomm’s VP of Marketing. The SoC comes with a video processing engine, which converts 1080p content to also Ultra HD content. Snapdragon 802 can be built into both TVs as well as set-top boxes and can be used for multitasking.

On the other hand, the Snapdragon 602A processor focuses on improving the infotainment system in automobiles. The chipset comes with a quad-core Krait CPU and Adreno 320 GPU and features Hexagon DPS, integrated GNSS baseband processing and additional cores for high performance audio, video and communication in cars.

The first of its kind SoC has been designed to meet all the industry standards like temperature, longevity, quality and reliability. Snapdragon 602A is also integrated with Gobi 9×15 multimode 3G/4G LTE connectivity and has VIVE 2-stream, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth LE 4.0 radios on board.

The first product with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 802 SoC is expected to debut later this year, while the company will start sampling the 600A chipset in cars by the end of first quarter.
