New Mobile Audi Smart Display tablet brings Android in – and out of – the car

Late last year we heard about Audi and Google’s partnership to provide an in-car infotainment system powered by Android.

Google has since unveiled its Open Automotive Alliance, and their new partnership with Audi has resulted in a specially designed tablet optimized for in-car use, but also can be taken outside the car as a fully-functioning standalone device.

The 10.2-inch FullHD Mobile Audi Smart Display runs on a heavily skinned launcher that’s optimized for integrated use on the dashboard, and lets you control the car’s audio system, navigation, and climate controls. Nevertheless, underneath is a full-fledged Android version that gives you all the functionality of a standard Android tablet, complete with Google Play Store access (exact Android version is as yet unspecified).

The device itself is build to withstand temperatures between -40°C and 80°C, although this means it comes with rather larger than usual screen bezels and thickness.

It’s unknown how much the Mobile Audio Smart Display tablet will run as a standalone device (or if it will even be available as one), or whether it’ll come as a standard feature of new Audi’s or a premium extra.
