Mozilla releases an upgraded mobile Firefox for Android and Maemo, now speedier

Today Mozilla announced the availability of a new version of the mobile Firefox. Compatible with Android and Maemo the new version of the app is still in beta but promises to improve start-up and page load times as well as responsiveness to panning and zooming.

Mozilla says that it has listened to its users feedback so far and has put it to good use in this new release. Internal tests have found the new beta to be three times faster than the stock Android browser at the Kraken benchmark, twice as fast on SunSpider and slightly faster on the V8 benchmark.

Additionally, start-up time and page load time should see a notable improvement. Stability is also said to be taken a step further, while the memory usage has been reduced.

The number of compatible plug-ins also continues to grow and now exceeds 100, including Firefox sync, which allows you to share browsing history, bookmarks, tabs, passwords and form-fill data between your desktop and mobile browsers.

Android users can go and grab the latest Firefox version from the Android market, while Maemo users should follow this link to acquire the version compatible with their smartphones.
