Huawei Ascend P1 battery life test completes, scores come out mixed

We’ve had the Huawei Ascend P1 in our office long enough to run the battery tests. Since we couldn’t find official battery life numbers on Huawei’s website, this is our first look at how long the 1670mAh battery lasts.

The Ascend P1 performed more or less as we expected it to – with web browsing once again proving to be the bane of AMOLED screens. The other numbers are very good though.

Let’s start with talking. The phone certainly impressed us by going for 12 and a half hours straight on a 3G network. That’s one of the very best results we’ve gotten in this category, especially if you don’t count odd ducks like the Motorola RAZR MAXX or the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Web browsing on phones with AMOLED screens is typically a short term affair. The Huawei Ascend P1 is no exception here, lasting mere 3 hours and 23 minutes. The HTC One S, which uses the same screen, beats the P1 with 40 minutes here with a battery of equal capacity, so there’s no way around it – the P1 is one of the worst performers we’ve ever seen in this test.

The Ascend P1 redeemed itself in the video playback test. It lasted 7 hours and 38 minutes, which places it in the upper part of our battery life chart. It’s still 2 hours short of what the One S managed though.

All told, the Huawei Ascend P1 endurance rating works out to 34 hours. That means you have about a day and a half before you’ll need to recharge it, assuming you talk for one hour, browse the web for another hour and watch an hour of video each day.

Web browsing aside, the P1 offers decent battery life. If you do your browsing on another device – a tablet or laptop – then you can go much longer between charges. But if your phone is your primary access to the web, you’d do well to have a charger at hand at all times.
