Get iOS 5 on your older generation iPhone…kinda

A new custom firmware called Whited00r lets you install portions of iOS 5 on older iPhone models.

Whited00r brings a few modern improvements to the older iOS 3 and iOS 4 platforms to match the latest developments of iOS 5.

Some highlights include iOS 5-style reminders, sounds, shadows, wallpapers and folders. It also jailbreaks your phone and provides a carrier unlock, if needed.

There’s a caveat, of course, you can’t access the Apple App Store, but Whited00r provides an alternative one which features many popular iOS3 apps. It also enables certain features usually hidden by Apple, such as battery percentage, MMS, and Bluetooth or USB tethering. As for official apps, you can sideload those to the iPhones/iPods by syncing them with iTunes on your computer.
