Apple may have announced the Apple watch (twice) but the watch is still to go on sale. But even though there are still a month left for the watch to start shipping, developers have already started rolling out updates for their apps to make them work with the Apple Watch.
The list of apps available for the Apple Watch now includes Target, American Airlines, Nike+, Instagram, Twitter, OpenTable, Evernote, TripAdvisor, CNN, eBay, Shazam, NYTimes, Fandango, Citi Mobile Lite, Expedia, Runtastic, ESPN, and many more.
You don’t need to download any special app on the watch itself. The Apple Watch app is a component of the main app for the iPhone, and as long as you have the main app installed on the phone, the app will also appear on the watch. This is similar to Android Wear, but unlike Android Wear, these are proper apps with significantly expanded functionality, designed to minimize use of the app on the phone by letting you do the basic functions from the watch itself. Also, the Apple Watch app list is far more comprehensive even before the device is out, whereas Android Wear still doesn’t have half as many decent or useful apps almost a year since it launched. Twitter, for example, released an update to their iOS app yesterday that added Apple Watch functionality but still has nothing for Android Wear, which is the case with most developers.
One could still ponder if they really need a smartwatch but if you were on the fence due to the app availability, it doesn’t seem like you’re going to have that problem with the Apple Watch.
