It’s been a long time coming, but the latest usage statistics from Net Applications show that iOS has fallen behind Android in terms of total active usage.
While Android has long since surpassed Apple’s offering in terms of market share, this is the first time that Google’s mobile OS is also being used more than iOS.
The Top Operating System Share Trend for mobiles and tablets from Net Applications has been monitoring mobile usage since November of 2007, and provides statistics based on the traffic going through their network. Since last month, iOS dropped 1.42 points to hold 44.19% of the user base, while a rise of 0.87 points gives Android a share of 44.62%.
While the difference between the two OSs is currently less than half a point, the trend is more striking when looking back a year. In July 2013, iOS accounted for about 60% of the usage (despite already being behind in raw device numbers) of Net Applications‘ network, while Android stood at less than half of that at just over 25%.
Apple undoubtedly will look to right the ship next month, when it’s expected the company will announce the latest edition of its iPhone flagship, the iPhone 6, alongside new generations of its iPad tablet lineup.
Meanwhile, Windows Phone has also shown growth this past month to score 2.49% of usage, which bodes well for Microsoft.
