A new SoC by MediaTek is set to bring dual-core oomph to entry-level smartphones

It looks like the days of paltry single-core CPUs powering the entry-level smartphones are nearing to an end. A brand new SoC by MediaTek is set to bring dual-core oomph to the lowest tiers of the smartphone realm.

The MediaTek MT6572 SoC supports dual-core Cortex-A7 CPUs, clocked at up to 1.2GHz. HSPA+ connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi are naturally supported by the new chipset, as well as FM radio. Support for the Chinese TD-SCDMA is also on board.

The SoC supports 5MP camera unit which can record 720p video and displays with up to qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels). In a nutshell, the MT6572 offers a substantial improvement over today’s low-cost smartphones’ specs.

Most importantly, MediaTek’s latest SoC is being widely adopted by the manufacturer’s partners. The first smartphones with the new silicon are expected to show up in the beginning of June, which is welcome news for the company, as the adoption of entry-level smartphones is growing at a blistering pace.
