Samsung introduces 2TB SSD drives in 850 EVO and PRO series

Samsung expanded its 850 SSD series with 2TB drives, in both the PRO and EVO lineups. The company says it has seen increased demand for 500GB and bigger SSDs and the 2TB drives are a “strong driver into the era of multi-terabyte SSD solutions.”

The 2TB versions Samsung 850 EVO and 850 PRO are available in 50 countries right now.

They are pricy though – $800 for the EVO and $1,000 for the PRO – but on the plus side they’ll push the 1TB drives lower. A 1TB 850 EVO is currently $380 on Amazon.

The difference in price stems from different warranty – the SLC-based PRO gets a 10 year or 300TB written guarantee, while the MLC EVO get half for both (5yr/150TB). The PRO drive should also be slightly faster than the EVO, though past results have shown the differences to be pretty minor.

The new drives are built on Samsung’s 3D V-NAND technology and contain 128 individual flash chips. The chips themselves have 128 gigabit capacity spread across 32 layers (hence 3D). The SSDs feature upgraded MHX controllers and a whopping 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM (four 4 gigabit chips built on 20nm process).

Samsung is promising new high-capacity mSATA and M.2 drives too for laptops and mini PCs that support them. The 850 series currently tops out at 1TB in those formfactors.
