Google Maps gets lane guidance in some European countries

On both iOS and Android, the Google Maps app has today received support for lane guidance for highways in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Ireland.

Lane guidance does what you’d expect it to, given the name. It ensures you’re always on the right lane, when you’re in turn-by-turn navigation mode.

This system will let you know, for example, to change lanes before exiting a highway. Or when you approach a junction or exit with multiple lanes, you’ll be told which lane is best for your route, so you get on it as soon as possible. This helps you be prepared for all the junctions and highway exits, not having to switch lanes at the last moment.

Google hasn’t mentioned an app update coming in order to enable the new functionality on Google Maps for iOS and Android, so we assume the lane guidance has already been switched on server-side. Which means you can probably already use it, provided you’re in the aforementioned handful of countries where it’s now out. Hopefully more territories will get this feature in the future.
