Ricoh CX3 strikes with a back-lit sensor and an ample zoom range

Ricoh have officially announced the latest signing to their compact camera team. The Ricoh CX3 sports a 10 megapixel back-illuminated sensor and a 28-300mm equivalent lens. It seems that the company recognized for its willingness for innovate, but usually plagued by poor image quality is trying to take a completely new route with this one.

The 28mm zoom lens was a real exotic when they first appeared on a Ricoh camera (anyone remember the Caplio RX?) nearly six-years ago, but now they are considered pretty much standard, if not even too conservative. However the back-lit sensor should help the Ricoh CX3 achieve better low-light performance, especially when combined with the new noise reduction algorithm that the CX3 features. It will surely need it considering the relatively “slow” f/3.5-5.6 lens.

The Ricoh CX3 is also capable of shooting 720p video footage and features high-speed continuous shooting at 5 frames per second. Its LCD screen measures 3” in diagonal and sports VGA resolution (920k dots).
