My main area of usage is Excel. On an average day I have to run 6-8 different formulas, which many a times have more formulas nested in them on average 1000-1200 cells at a time, per sheet per workbook and I have to process a minimum of 20-30 such workbooks per day. No other office application till now could handle this much amount of workload without getting crashed except MS Office.

I have used both MS Word/Excel and LO Writer/Spreadsheet. They are more or less on an equal standing. It's just that some of the user interface you're used to in one may be a little different in the other. For example, did you know that you can assign almost any keyboard shortcuts in LO? Couldn't find that for MS. On the other hand, thesaurus comes preinstalled in MS while you have to download it for LO.

The real difference I so far heard about is the database. MS Access is more advanced than LO Base, if what I read is true. But then again, the one major problem I had in MS Office is that there are compatibility problems between different versions. A .doc file created by one version, say 2010, tends to open a bit crumbled up if opened by another version like 2007 or worse in 2003. That is unbefitting of a supposedly well-developed application backed by a giant tech corporation.

The real problem I believe is that there seems to be only limited compatibility with regards to formatting, especially in Word/Writer. If you use too many formats in one, then the other is less likely to display them accurately. That's the problem that bugging me so far.
