Still, what Sony did is inexcusable. Customer’s personal and financial information were kept in unencrypted, plain-text form. There was horribly lax security on the internal server, which was also running an old and outdated version of Apache. Sony, being as big as they are, should have known better, and or they should have employed somebody who knew how to better secure their customer’s files. Sure, shit happens, but Sony basically gift-wrapped this data for the thieves. Not to mention, several people have already reported to news sites that they’ve seen fraudulent activity on the cards they had linked to their PSN account. I didn’t, but I reported the problem to my credit card company and got a new number issued last week just to be safe. Besides the financial risk, it was a huge personal security risk as account name, password and security questions and answers were leaked. These passwords and security questions could give identity thieves generous information to work with. It’s a complete pain in the ass to deal with, and again, I’m disappointed with Sony for allowing it to happen.

I will not be buying anything on PSN with anything other than prepaid cards from now on, and I will definitely think twice about sharing any of my personal information with PSN ever again… New security or not. Once bitten… blah blah. Definitely not the end of the world, but I really don’t think people should be taking this so nonchalant.
