An alternative on 7 if the Windows desktop crashes: Ctrl-Shift-Escape for Task Manager, end explorer.exe, restart explorer.exe. Often works.

‘almost’ is correct. Some older games, particularly, really hate Vista, and won’t work in compatibility mode for XP.

That’s my main reason, certainly – at least with the stock UI. Installing a Metro/whatever-you’re-meant-to-call-it-this-week replacement makes it generally better than 7 to my mind, though.

A 3rd party software is available if you want to have a start button and to force the system to start in the desktop mode…
