Apple and Sony did designs, but they did not design the component pieces. Take the Retina display. It is advertised as Brand New Design from Apple. The screen was designed and built by LG for Apple, at Apple's request and specifications. But everything about the screen and how it's built is LG. If you stud the design and manufacturing process of a screen you will understand why it is extremely difficult and expensive for Apple, or other companies to Invent their screens.

Who cares who is number one? You are talking about one of the 5 (or so) companies in the world who manufacture this stuff at a large scale. In this case, there is no First Place or Second Place. They are all on the same place: they provide screens for everybody else.

I don't have this information so i cannot disagree, but the TFT panels are a variation of LCD panels, which use a thin-film transistor (semiconductor based). They are still LCD active matrices. But this is not the point, who created first. Samsung, LG, Sharp are one of the few that build this things (with the logical variations). Samsung may be the first to implement the TFT in a consumer device, but they are not the first or only ones who built it. It is a general technology and it was used by all major players from the industry.

It's interesting how comments are down voted if the statement disagrees the public opinion. Even if it is the truth. I know you are all into Bravias and Retinas, but those are just design names used for marketing. The technology behind them is still manufactured by only few companies who have access to mineral resources and have the ability to create semiconductors. And this is the toughest part, not the design, software enhancements and pixel number.

Oh my god, what have i started. Guys, take 10 and relax. The point is that the industry is more than branding and marketing names. There are semiconductors factories where workers get cancer after 3-7 years of employment. They build you'r beloved Retina and Bravia. And it happens that a lot of them are owned by LG (which for those under 20, is a far larger producer than a "smartphone" producer).
