It's quite simple actually. First of all, even the slimmest camera is not as slim as some of the slimmer phones out there. Also if you notice, the super slim cameras always have a wide body because the components are spread out since there is no space to stack them. Because the way cameras are held this is not a problem (in fact the wider the better) but you can't do that with a phone because you need to hold it with one hand and also operate it with your thumb, so it can't be too wide.

And lastly, a camera only has camera components inside to worry about. A phone has camera components, radio units and all sorts of things, which it has to fit in a smaller space. This is why we can't have the large sensors found on cameras or the large lenses or the optical zoom. The few phones that do have optical zoom are quite thick and also quite heavy.

@5329785015ca582f1896da25e6d43fda:disqus

This ZS15 and TS4 have 4x and 4.6x optical zoom. Maybe phone manufacture can create something like 2.5x zoon and still below 1 cm thin.

or maybe some just create something like motorola razr, thin with a hump. and 4x optical zoom, i bet it will kick some ass.

I agree. If sensor technology and post processing algorithms get a lot better for phones, so will they for standalone cameras. I expect standalone point-and-shoot cameras to lose popularity over the net 5 years, but not be obsolete in any way.

I have an older version of that camera (TZ-20) and they're not 9 mm thin :) Yes, still extremely thin when you consider the amount of zoom they have, but fitting a motorised lens set-up into a modern smartphone body is quite hard.

I disagree with Sony, first as much as smart phones are getting really good. They can never be better than a well sorted point and shoot. My Panasonic DMC-FS7 takes better shots than my sisters Nokia N8. Furthermore, any smartphone with a decent camera is a lot more than what most avarage people can afford.
