Apple-approved iPhone video recording app makes it to the AppStore

by 337 comments

For the first time in the AppStore history Apple approved an app, which truly extends the iPhone 2G and 3G functionality – yes, I’m talking about the video recording.

I won’t go on the way about how this precedent will help the future software development and approval, because I don’t believe it will make any change at all. In fact, taking in mind the capturing capabilities of the iVideoCamera – the “mind-blowing” 160×213 pixels at 3 fps – I believe that this is some kind of a nasty joke than anything else.

Viewsonic VNB102 Viewbook or how I broke two of my top buying rules

by 15 comments

I broke two of my own rules today when I got myself a new ultra cheap netbook. It’s a viewbook actually or at least that’s what Viewsonic is calling their VNB102. But whatever Marketing is naming it, it’s a plain netbook that’s hardly exciting enough to write home about. Yet I’m writing about it here as it made me break my two top buying rules.

ITG xpPhone boots up on video, looks pretty darn big

by 18 comments

Yes, it’s a phone. No, it’s not, it runs XP. Yes, IT IS! No it’s not, it’s as big as a brick. Yes, it is a phone – that’s the ITG xpPhone.

Now that we’ve got that cleared let’s get a little bit more serious. The ITG xpPhone monster of a mobile phone has been sitting in the spotlight since day one so naturally when its first video demo pops up we just can’t miss sharing it with you. What becomes evident though is the huge size of the device.

Google launches URL shortner, bit.ly takes it like a Pro

by 566 comments

Short URLs are becoming more and more a part of the daily life on the Internet – especially with microblogs such as Twitter where every character counts. Google, trying to be all things on the Internet as always, launched their own. And so did Facebook.

Google launches goo.gl URL shortner

Christmas Lights: Origins, an electrifying Christmas story

by 467 comments

Everyone likes Christmas lights, but have you ever wondered how they were invented? Well, someone at Gizmodo sure did. They have an extensive post detailing how the world went from the first electric light bulb to the first Christmas lights setup.

In the olden days, people used candles but that was before Thomas Edison came along. As one of the pioneers of electricity and light bulbs (plus a bit of talent for showmanship) he was the perfect guy to kickstart the whole Christmas light decoration thing.

Vodafone H1 has 720p HD video recording, but somehow they fail to advertize it?

by 8 comments

Sometimes we can’t help but wonder if we’ll ever get what’s going on in the minds of manufacturers’ PR pros. Do you remember the huge PR campaign Samsung threw for Omnia HD? They never stopped bragging about its HD video recording, even though it barely hit 24 fps.

Well, in the case of LiMo-based Vodafone 360 Samsung H1 (yes, that’s a name for a single handset) the PR teams have gone in the completely opposite direction. They’ve managed to keep its HD-recording capabilities completely on the hush-hush.

Vodafone H1

We were just tipped about this from a reader and when I went to research the matter further, it turned out the 720p video recording has been featured in a press release dated back from 24 September. But somehow both Samsung and Vodafone PR teams have failed to make a point out of it. I really can’t think of any good reason why the Vodafone 360 Samsung H1 PR campaign did not involve the video recording, considering they did a really good job with Omnia HD ads.

The same reader that helped us clear the issue (thanks, Alex) sent us this YouTube video, which is actually taken by the Vodafone 360 Samsung H1 in 720p HD resolution.

A few days ago Google released betas for both Mac and Linux for public download. In addition, the extensions gallery is up and running for Windows and Linux and you can check the available plug-ins just now. Mac extensions are also on their way, but are still in early state.

Well, now you are welcome to download and try the new public beta version. And please enjoy the introduction of the Chrome for Mac from one of the chief engineers, who made all this possible.

Buy a Google phone or else… Google will totally blackmail you into buying it

by 9 comments

I’ll probably remember 2009 as the year of my total surrender to Web 2.0. I’ve practically moved all my personal stuff up there in the Google cloud of web applications. I’ve got my calendars, my contacts, some of my documents, family photos, family videos, and my primary email account all sitting nicely in Google’s control. They all sync and play nicely with my smartphone, I have access to them wherever I go and best of all, it’s all free.

I’m already way beyond the “just trying how things will work out” phase and I have committed fully to this relationship.

And then you stumble into one of those funny videos. And it just makes you think – what if…

Dell Vostro V13 laptop is only 16.5mm thick, costs a quarter of Dell Adamo XPS

by 11 comments

If you’re suffering from Apple MacBook Air or Dell Adamo XPS cravings this just might be your lucky day. Meet the Dell Vostro V13 – it’s a 16.5mm thick 13-incher that brings very much the same specs as the Dell Adamo XPS, but at a netbook-scale price.

Okay, I’ll admit that the XPS 9.9mm thickness for a laptop sounds (and looks) amazing – it can even put most smartphones to shame. But the price is just too hard to swallow. The Dell Vostro V13 on the other hand is actually reasonably priced… though it’s only available in Singapore right now. Which isn’t a big deal, considering it’s not quite official yet (though it’s up on the Dell Sinagpore website, specs and all).
