by 83 comments

Apple might have a 21.5” iMac with 4K Retina display in the works. Code within the latest Mac OS X El Capitan beta mentions the unannounced all-in-one.

A 4K Retina variant will likely replace the currently available 21.5” iMac. The desktop will slot below the 27” iMac with 5K Retina display in the company’s product range. It will also certainly carry a more affordable price tag than the 27” model. Read more »

The 200GB SanDisk microSD card is now up for grabs for $239.44

by 59 comments

Remember that crazy 200GB microSD card that SanDisk unveiled at the beginning of March? Well, it’s now available to buy. And the good news is that it’s quite a lot cheaper than it was expected to be.

The bad news is that it’s still not cheap. Amazon will sell you one for $239.44, which sounds like a lot – but consider two things. First, you’re buying the world’s largest capacity microSD card. And second, the recommended retail price for it is a whopping $399. Read more »

Original Asus ZenWatch can now be yours for just $149.99

by 34 comments

Now that Asus has unveiled the ZenWatch 2, its predecessor is probably (slowly) on its way out. Before it gets discontinued, though, it’s getting its price cut. And rather substantially. In fact, this is the biggest price drop we’ve seen so far for the original ZenWatch.

You can now purchase one from Amazon or Best Buy for only $149.99. That’s $50 below its launch price, and $30 less than the previous lowest price we’ve seen for it. Read more »

Google’s Hangouts reaches 1 billion installs in the Play Store

by 79 comments

Another Google app for Android has passed the 1 billion install threshold today. This time it’s Hangouts, following other apps such as Gmail. Apparently up until this point there have been only ten apps in this exclusive club, and only three of those aren’t made by Google.

Interestingly, all three are made by Facebook – we’re talking about the social network’s main app, Messenger, as well as WhatsApp. The last two of those are direct competitors to Google’s Hangouts, and it definitely seems like they are a lot more successful right now. Read more »

New Samsung commercial mocks the iPhone’s lack of wireless charging

by 152 comments

Wireless charging is definitely the new craze and with integrated support for both major standards – Qi and PMA in the Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung has earned some bragging rights. And a new commercial seems to prove that the Korean giant is not above dangling its new toy in the face of Apple and its “wall hugging” fans.

This advertisement tactic is really nothing new, but still exploiting the “look at what you are missing out on” angle has a powerful effect on users, especially trend-conscious ones. The real situation might be far from the tangle ball of cables the video portrays, but, there is some grain of truth, as Apple is guilty of requiring a ton of adapters and cables, just to get everything working together. For a company that puts such great value on simplicity and user experience, this is an issue that has persisted for surprisingly long. Read more »

Amazon is offering yet another batch of paid apps and games for free

by 16 comments

Amazon has really been trying hard to expand its vast online store to the realm of Android apps – a niche mostly monopolized by Google. The etailer giant has been continuously running major promotions giving away select paid application for free and todays sees the latest such giveaway.

We have seen Amazon offer as much as $140 worth of software in previous promotions, so, it is definitely worth checking each bundle out as it comes. The latest installment has a value of just over $50, but includes quite a few quality apps worth owning, especially free of charge. Read more »

Steam suspends ‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ sales due to performance issues [Update: WB issues apology]

by 39 comments

We are only halfway through 2015 and it’s already clear which game is going to be the biggest disaster of the year. Despite being the most anticipated game of the year, developer Rocksteady dropped the ball hard on the PC version of the game, to the point where Steam had to suspend sales.

The issue is related to the atrocious performance of the PC version. First of all, the game is capped at 30fps, which makes no sense. Even if you manage to bypass the restriction by editing config files, the game still performs poorly on high end graphics cards. On top of that, the PC version has poorer graphics than the PS4 version, possibly a first in the history of gaming, with several of the visual effects not present on the PC release. Read more »

Facebook Messenger no longer requires a Facebook account

by 38 comments

WhatsApp and similar mobile-first (or mobile-only) messaging apps have pioneered the concept of using your phone number to log in years ago. But so far Facebook’s Messenger has required people to have a Facebook account in order to use it. Not anymore.

Starting today, you can sign up for Facebook Messenger even if you don’t have a Facebook account. After you install the Messenger app, when you run it for the first time, you’ll see the screen above. You can choose “Not on Facebook?” to be able to sign up using your phone number. Read more »

by 29 comments

The original price for the LTE-capable HTC Nexus 9 tablet with 32GB of storage was a whopping $599. We’re quite far from its launch, though, so understandably that has gone down. But you probably weren’t expecting it to have dropped as much as it has.

Right now Expansys USA is selling this exact model for only $379.99. That’s $220 less than the initial price, and $120 less than this retailer’s previous pricing for the tablet. Read more »

Sprint drops the HTC One M9 to $99.99 with a contract

by 19 comments

We’ve already heard that the One M9 is doing anything but great for HTC in terms of sales, and now Sprint may have sort of confirmed that through its latest move. The carrier is now offering HTC’s latest flagship smartphone for just $99.99 with a new two-year contract.

That’s the pricing territory of mid-rangers you normally don’t consider unless you can’t afford more expensive top of the line offerings. Generally when a price cut like this occurs so soon into a product’s life, poor sales can be to blame. Read more »
