Apple rumored to showcase split-screen multitasking for iPad during WWDC next month

According to a report in 9to5Mac, Apple will showcase the long-awaited split-screen multitasking for iPad tablets during WWDC next month. The functionality was initially expected to debut alongside iOS 8 last year.

HTC releases official Mail app for Lollipop devices on Google Play Store

HTC released the official Sense Mail app in the Google Play store. The application functions like any other modern email app – one can read and compose emails, create folders, and manage multiple email accounts using it.

Apple Maps rumored to finally get transit directions in iOS 9

The lack of public transit directions in Apple Maps may be baffling, but it looks like the company is finally going to take care of this glaring omission soon. According to a new rumor, transit directions will be added to the Apple Maps app that will be part of iOS 9.

Apple’s next version of its mobile operating system should be demoed in June at the company’s annual developer-focused conference (WWDC). As in previous years, we expect iOS 9 to be released around the time the new iPhones ship, so probably in the fall. Read more »

AT&T announces the LG G Pad F 8.0, available on May 29

Today AT&T took the wraps off a new Android tablet made by LG. It’s called G Pad F 8.0 and will be up for grabs at the carrier starting on May 29, which is next Friday. It bears some resemblance to the G Pad 8.0 from last year, both in terms of looks as well as specs.

The G Pad F 8.0 however comes with a built-in stylus and a full-size USB port. Those seem to be its main differentiating features. The screen is quoted as being an “HD+” IPS panel, which we assume means it has a resolution of 1,280×800. Read more »

YouTube now supports 60fps livestreaming through its new HTML5 player

YouTube recently launched 60fps playback and now it’s enabling the smoother framerate for livestreaming videos too. This update comes thanks to the new HTML5 player for livestreams, the old one used Flash.

Cyanogen plans to set up India office in coming few months

From rejuvenated brand image to squabble over software updates, Cyanogen saw it all last year while taking a dip in the fast growing smartphone market of India. After Xiaomi and OnePlus recently opened their India offices, Cyanogen plans to follow suit in coming three months.

Vikram Natarajan, senior vice-president of global partnerships and distribution at Cyanogen, told ET Tech, “India is very attractive. It is one of the hyper-growth markets for mobile today.” Read more »

Oppo R7 performance benchmarks

As you probably noticed we got the chance to spend to quality time with the newly announced Oppo R7. We already gave you live shots, camera samples and our first hand impressions of the company’s latest flagship.

Now we also have a few benchmark tests to try and see what kind of performance the Snapdragon 615 chipset delivers. This might be Qualcomm’s mid-range offering, but the R7 has some great aspirations so it’s important that the company got the most of it. The smartphone will launch on Android 4.4 KitKat, which is what also powers powers our test unit, so we do expect a small boost later down the road when the Lollipop update arrives. Read more »

BBM for iOS beta update brings Timed Message and Message Retract features

BlackBerry has released a new version (v2.9.0.6) of its BBM beta app for iOS that brings along some new features as well as several bug fixes.

The update includes a new Timed Message feature that allows you to control how long messages and pictures you share with contacts can be viewed within BBM. It also adds support for the Message Retract feature that lets you remove your message from your BBM chat before or after it has been read by the recipient. Read more »

Viber app now available on Chromebooks

Free VoIP and messaging app Viber is now available on Chrome OS. To download the app, you’d have to head over to the Chrome Web Store on your Chromebooks.

For those not aware, Viber is an app that allows you to call over the internet to anyone using the app and also to landline numbers and also send messages. The best things about this app is it’s one of the most universal apps you can find, because it’s available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Windows 8, OS X, BlackBerry and even Nokia Symbian phones. It is a fact that the immensely popular maps and GPS navigation app already has at its disposal a large quantity of useful data, like traffic flow information, access to Google’s immense database of points of interest and numerous other things that all add up to an industry-leading experience.

Some of this data, however useful, often remain hidden away to most users. Apple allegedly planning to switch to San Francisco as default font for iOS and OS X

Apple has been working on its new font – San Francisco – for a while now and we saw it debut on the Apple Watch announced last year. But soon you might be seeing it as the default font on iOS and OS X, replacing the current Helvetica Neue.

San Francisco is a heavier typeset designed to emphasise visibility, especially on smaller displays of the Apple Watch. The font also scales well to larger displays and works quite well on iOS and OS X. In comparison, many people find the current Helvetica Neue to be quite light and hard to read, especially on iOS. Google outs limited-edition live smartphone cases designed by Skrillex

Google released a trio of limited-edition live smartphone cases designed by the Grammy-winning producer Skrillex. The accessories are part of a new series of limited-edition covers for Android handsets by Google, dubbed Editions.

The cases are available for Motorola Nexus 6, LG Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S6, as well as Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Read more »

Android 5.0 Lollipop is now rolling out to the LG G Pad 8.3 LTE for Verizon

Another day, another Lollipop update rollout. This time we’re talking about the LG G Pad 8.3 tablet, in its LTE-capable incarnation, which was launched by Verizon. Following the update to Android 4.4 KitKat, which it got last year, and then another bug fixer, the G Pad 8.3 is now finally receiving the tasty treat known as Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

Verizon’s support documents say you should expect to see a new software button arrangement (and design), lock screen notifications, smart lock (using proximity to other devices to auto-unlock the tablet), the new notification screen design, the much-hated Interruptions feature that replaces Silent mode, floating action buttons everywhere, screen pinning, search in Settings, multi-user accounts accessible from the notification panel, as well as an “Avoid bad Wi-Fi connections” item in Settings.
