AMD facing yet another round of layoffs

by 35 comments

AMD has definitely been going through some rough times, struggling to retain profitability. It might not seem so on the surface, especially considering the company is working hard on its promising 6th Generation Carrizo A-Series chips and still holding its own in the competitive GPUs market with quality offers, such as the R9 chips. But,for all the technological advancements and move towards true heterogeneous computing, AMD is still struggling to earn enough cash.

This has forced the company’s management into more than one tough decision. The latest of those is another round of layoffs – industry sources claim that after a disappointing Q2 sales report for the company’s APUs, a lot of jobs are in danger. It is hard to say which positions might be affected in particular, but we can only assume that less profitable parts of the company will be hit the hardest. Read more »

by 3 comments

Ubisoft has announced a new game for the mobile platform, Rayman Adventures. The game has the same side-scrolling platforming action that we have come to expect and love but new for mobile is complete freedom to move around instead of the auto move mechanism of the previous two games, Rayman Jungle Run and Fiesta Run.

If you read our reviews of the two games, you’d know we absolutely loved them. With Adventures, Ubisoft is bringing more of the console side of the gameplay to mobile. How well this works out on a touchscreen remains to be seen, as the simplified gameplay and controls of the previous two games is exactly what made them so good on mobile devices. Read more »

LG attaches a G4 to a drone, promo video ensues

by 24 comments

LG’s arm in Israel has decided to film a new promotional video for the G4. That in itself would be nothing out of the ordinary. What is a bit special in this case, however, is that most of the video is actually shot on the G4 itself. Which is strapped to a drone.

Now that drones are so hip and fashionable, LG thought its G4 should get some of that flying action too. Furthermore, the handset is filming its travels, so it can document what it’s seen. The music is dramatic, and the scenery is certainly spectacular. Read more »

AMD warns its Q2 sales are lower than anticipated

by 20 comments

AMD has issued a sales warning for the second quarter of this year. What this means is that the company expects its results for Q2 to show lower sales than initially forecasted. AMD is now advising investors that its actual sales for Q2 will be down 8% compared to the first quarter, more than the previous guidance which hovered around 3%.

If you’re wondering what may be to blame for the situation, it’s all apparently related to weaker than expected demand for PCs, according to the chip maker itself. Hence, its APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) have not sold as well as expected. Read more »

Flipkart is expected to go app-only this September

by 79 comments

Flipkart, India’s largest online retailer, is reportedly gearing up for a huge business change. The e-tailer is planning to shut down its website altogether and follow an app-only business model. This should happen this September and is sure to stir things up in the country’s online commerce segment. The announcement was made by Punit Soni, the company’s CEO at a staff meeting, so it is pretty much official.

As you can imagine, this is a well thought out move and definitely not void of logic. Flipkart has estimated that about 75% of its entire traffic comes from mobile devices, so it doesn’t make much sense to support and invest in a traditional website anymore. The company’s second site Myntra actually already went down the same route in May 2015. The fashion-centric market reported similar numbers prior to the shift – 80 percent of traffic and 70% of purchases were via mobile app. Read more »
