'unless you’re looking for something to show off with, they’re worthless'

If you want a real computer in a compact and light form factor, that can do most things a larger computer can do, but still be small enough to take with you 'just in case', then they are very worth it.

', because they have the same features as a netbook, but they’re more expensive.'
What netbook has high resolution screen (most have 1024x600 - have to scroll just to use most web pages), usable keyboard that isn't spongy, high speed connectivity, 60% of the weight of the lightest netbooks (typically 1kg), and has a quality finish.

'depending on the price, the ipad may be better.'
Quite different niche markets. A P series does not do what an iPad does and vice versa, except in the most superficial ways.

The P is for those who want have their normal Windows work functionality in a compact and lightweight form factor. However, it is not really set up as an entertainment device.

The iPad is for those who want entertainment and quick access to lightweight apps on the go. I don't know why they don't provide noise-cancelling fuctionality as in the Sony, as it really allows much lower listening levels (like below deafness-causing) in noisy trains and planes.

Unless you can see how the form factor really benefits your work style, then you may as well just forget about it.

The price accompanies the small form factor with high resolution screen, very usable, quality keyboard, fast connectivity options and great looks (except for those gaudy orange and green ones - but then someone likes them).

'What’s the good of 2Gb ram and a faster processor when you can’t do much with it.'

It can do most things, except for heavyweight stuff like development or graphics design. Documentation or report writing is well within its capabilities.

'There are 7200 RPM mobile HD’s on the market.'
The SSD trounces those in speed and power efficiency. I have had plenty of room to store all my work files, even with 64GB.

'Maybe make it a little bigger but much more versatile.'
And immediately lose what attracts most people to actually buy it. Compactness, lightness and style.
Otherwise, it is just another 1kg or so brick and less likely to be taken 'just in case'.

The P has a market segment (otherwise why would Sony still be churning out models all over the world) that does utilise the small form factor with a high resolution screen.

In Australia, the only model with WAN and GPS has a 128GB SSD.

However, I had the previous model with 64GB and I never hit the limit, but I didn't load video which it isn't really designed for anyway. There was plenty of room for the few GB od music.

I used it for when I had to do work on a customer's site if need be, without feeling I had a brick.

The screen is a great benefit over the iBad!

As I wrote on the samsung tablet, it’s all (well almost all) about resolution and viewing distance here!
A handheld touchdriven device (phone or tablet) can conveniently be used closer to the eye than a laptop/pc.

As long as the resolution doesn’t get finer than about 1/6000 of the viewing distance (=resolution of human eye for person with good vision), it makes sense, to get a smooth picture(!).

So with a 8″ screen 1600×768 would match a viewing distance of 69cm (=27″), or less for impaired vision of course. And this sounds convenient for a handheld QWERTY-device.

[And this is also why the resolution of the iPad stinks... with 9.7" and 1024x768 it is designed to baseball players with arms 1.2m long each, or as a handicap device for people with rather poor vision... With such a huge screen (for a handheld device), it should have had something like full HD...]
