The G line lost a significant share, people that require more on the tele end for instance. I still have my G7 and I won't be upgrading to G12, because 140mm is not enough for me.

I've tried G9, G10 and G11. But the least is the best :) Mim, could you share us your setting to minimize the noise especially on minimum light setting? I found G10 has more noise than G11 :)

its completely true every thing is sensor
i believed that the nokia n8 can take better pix cause of its large sensor

I don't really agree that the G series lost its niche. The EVIL/SLIC or whatever you call them can match the G series size only if you use a pancake lenses. Even if you use the 3x zoom kit, they will all be quite a bit bigger than the G series. Size wise, I think the EVIL cameras are let down by their lenses.

Exillims do not shoot in RAW and I can confidently say that non of the Casios can match the image quality of the G series. In my opinion, only the Panny LX series or the Samsung EX are equals of the G series in terms of image quality.

The Ricoh GXR system do have modules that tries to compete in this market, but so far, I find the GXR to be slightly sub-par in terms of image quality when compared to the Canon/Panny/Samsung offerings.

The bottom line is, if you are looking for a compact camera that comes with a 5x zoom, RAW files, OVF, Ext Flash Hot Shoe and a reasonably good image quality at high ISO (for a compact), there is simply no other options in the market other than the G series.

Some people dismiss the OVF as useless but on one trip to an offshore island, I realized I only had one battery with me, so to conserve battery, I used mainly the OVF. It is not perfect but that allowed me to shoot 300-400 shots that day and still be left with a few bars of battery power for some night shots.

The Panny LX series and Samsung EX series are definitely strong competitors to the G series but by having different zoom range, maximum apertures and design focus, all three cameras are unique in their own ways.

Nobody yet has noticed the new knob, operated by the index finger. G11 didn't have it. Hopefully, it will let you change settings (exposure etc.) way more comfortably than using the wheel on the back of the camera. I think it's quite an important change.

About the looks - a camera is not meant to look good, it's meant to take good-looking photos.

The main point is the sensor and the price. If it's the same sensor as in G11, then the G12 is still a compact camera with a small (physical size, not megapixels), noisy sensor. If you want to be pr0, you can have a DSLR for a similar price. If you want something really portable, there are smaller cameras, e.g. the Casio range with similar capabilities. If you want the best of both worlds - stash some more money (not that much more) for the mini 4/3.

The G11 costs 448 USD on Amazon. G12 should be similar.
Canon Rebel XS is 499 USD on Amazon. It's one of the cheapest DSLRs on the market and the price includes a kit lens.
The Casio Exillims are 100 USD - 250 USD, depending on the model, but all are noticeably smaller than the G series.
Panasonic GF1 (micro 4/3) costs 679 USD on Amazon.

The G series used to be meant for people who wanted a pr0 camera, but didn't want a DSLR, either for its price or size. Now it seems that the G series has lost its niche.
