It’s interesting to see a XBL and cover tie-in as a strategy for capturing value, over the single upfront cost that’s more typical of consoles historically. I wonder if Microsoft have taken a nod from the mobile industry with contracts subsidising hardware?

The are probably doing this because they are planning to release a replacement soon. This is ‘cleaning out’ stock imo. Most buyers will regret it after a couple of months when the new one is out and they will have to pay termination fees just to gewt out of the 24 months binding time.
