That's definitely true, both Microsoft and Apple are working on merging thier mobile OSes with thier own desktop OSes .
This's absolutly the future of smartphones OS, this will not only help the average users, but even the professional ones, actually.

When saying that this will happen in future, in this case future means another more several years (4 to 7 years),
despite the fact that both OSes(mobile and desktop) seem to be developing quickly, we are yet to see that merging happening any time soon.

Intel stopped pushing for MeeGo, even before Nokia left the project.

So the way I see it, Samsung did not replace Nokia.
It feels very much like a new project, that is only partly based on the Moblin project Intel envisioned.

The thing that felt most promising about MeeGo was the fact that it was a desktop grade OS that run on a phone. It could have gained some traction on desktops as well, finally bringing a serious Linux offer for desktops, backed up properly by major players. They even got that company that makes quick-boot OSes on board, and finally you could have had a quick boot full OS, that used little resources, and with both mobiles and computers on board, the apps support could have been pretty good.

I saw that as the future of smartphones.

Tizen and Sailfish does not feel the same, at all.

And with Win8/WinRT/WP8, it seems that MS is following that line that MeeGo planted (just not fully in this implementation, but as a start, in Windows 9, there will probably not be a RT version, just Win 9 that runs both on arm and X86, with the difference beeing only performance and power consumption).

And the CPU rumours about Apple, might suggest that they are actually doing it the other way around, bringing mobile OS to desktops. And that level of funtionality could prove enough for many average users, and further improve their margins (developing two OSes, especially with only one beeing truly successfull, is not cost effective), at the loss of some professional users, but some of them might be won over by more professional iOS apps and higher CPU performance (Core audio and Core Midi, already makes it usable for some basic music production, and Apple will probably build on that, and Adobe might very well introduce a more professional version of Photoshop for tablets, and a lot of layout/graphical design worked perfomed on macs today does not really need that much performance... and will we see improved multitasking actually worth its name).

But others seems to look more at web-apps instead.

as i remember correctly, Jelly Bean incorporates part of the Linaro enhancements into the OS, plus, the buttery smooth is thanks to 60fps triple buffering, which a i9100's GPU can easily pull it off, Android is being optimized further upon release iterations, but do look at MeeGo, it already gives smooth experience most of the time with just OMAP 3630, and now sailfish, it just shows how much more optimized this OS is, compared to Android as of now, I do agree that Android will improve, but that will take time, meanwhile, even if the run a dalvik VM on top of sailfish, I think the performance lost would lead to somewhere near android's native performance, more or less. Plus, just.. it's good to have more open source OS in the market for more choice sake, I really don't understand why you guys make so much fuzz about one new OS entering a market and complain about why they didnt wanna branch another Android out. As i said, OS monopoly is a bad thing, and competition pushes improvement

Well, not entirely. Tizen is far from closed to what MeeGo was. For starter, Tizen's development platform of choice is HTML 5 and that's certainly very different from what MeeGo was. You can say that Tizen is a replacement of MeeGo after Nokia-Intel partnership fell off.

Sailfish is more true to what MeeGo intended to be, it's a fork from MeeGo.

Hahaha thank you for that insightful information! So to sum it up Tizen is the official MeeGo re-incarnation while Sailfish is an unofficial tangent comprised of the people who spearheaded the N9 development. Tizen = Software resources while Sailfish = People resources
